A1c level of 7.8

Dh has just had his blood come back as A1c level of 7.8- no way to speak to the doc now till next week. This is in the range that suggests he is diabetic according to the notes under the blood result online. What might happen next aside from being advised to get his weight down?
Is there a medication they will put him on or will he need insulin?

Whilst that's not great, unless I'm not converting it right, it's not absolute horrendous. I would think that's completely reversable with diet. If he's type 2 which is the most likely scenario.

Does he have any symptoms? It sounds like they've caught this reasonably early.

I wouldn't panic and make any major changes until he's spoken to the Dr but maybe lay off the sweet stuff and reduce carbs and get out for a walk. Heel lifts are good for burning sugar.

He'll likely be put on a low carb diet to get his weight down and to stop spiking blood sugar.

Good luck.

Thank you, he hasn't really had many symptoms although he says he has been thirsty and tired a lot. His BMI is 31 so he could do to lose some weight. He plays football twice a week so works out hard on those two days so he is shocked as he relates to himself as fit. It was just an annual check up he had- but he had not had one for 4 years.

Good that it's been picked up then OP.

If he's exercising then he's half way there, just needs to sort out his diet. Could be just the kick up the bum he needs. If I get another good Hba1c in 6 months I will be deemed to have reversed my type 2. I was top end of normal bmi so not overweight to start with which presented a challenge!

I think it 12% of his body weight he should be looking to lose in order to reverse. But I'm not a doctor or expert so he should do his own research after speaking to the GP.

It's clearly better if he can manage this without medication if that's possible for him.

This gp website is good op. Our surgery flag people newly diagnosed with type 2 to it.

Thanks everyone for all the useful advice, well he has immediately gone low carb/ no sugar since finding out a few days ago and has lost 5 pounds already and he is committed to getting down from 215 pounds at 5 11 to 185 pounds by the summer. He won't even have milk in his tea so he is taking it seriously and I will join him too as I could do to lose 20 pounds too.

Good luck with it all.

I lost nearly 40lbs in 4 months and I was normal bmi to start with.

Well done Big Boys that is amazing. He has dropped ten pounds already so he is committed.
