I think I’m going to be diagnosed with type 2

I have a doc appointment tomorrow but the nurse just rang with my blood results and I think I’m going to be diagnosed with type 2 tomorrow. I’m devastated tbh. I’m hugely overweight but I have been in denial for so long. My h1bac is 50.

I’m so upset and angry with myself for letting it get this bad.

It is only just in diabetic range. By the sounds of it lifestyle and diet changes could yet reverse it,

Mumgineer · 19/12/2023 19:39

Lizs thanks for the reply. Is it enough to be diagnosed though or would it need to be repeated in 3 months to get a diagnosis. I have been very stressed lately too and believe this can also be a factor. My blood pressure is also gone just over the line to stage 1 hypertension.

You can reverse this, mine was 47 in June, so as high as it could be without being diagnosed with Type 2. I immediately started eating low carb/high fat as recommended for diabetics and I have lost 22lbs, brought my blood pressure down (it was high for me rather than getting towards a danger level) and my latest blood sugar is 36.

You can do this!

Have a look at this https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diet/low-carb-high-fat-diet.html

Thanks for the information. This is really after giving me the kick up the arse I have needed for a long time.

I think that is exactly what it was for me, and I think reaching a point of being really worried about my health and having other conditions that would be worsened by high blood sugars, has made such a difference. Please come back and let us know how you get on 💐

So met the doctor this morning and yes I am now type 2. I’m so pissed off with myself. She said I’m very lucky for it to be caught now as there is no damage to my body and that I have a very good chance of bringing the levels below the range if I lose 10kg. I’ve been started on metformin. If I can lose weight and maintain for 6 months I may be able to try coming of the meds but I’ll still be monitored to ensure the levels stay low.

You can do this OP. I'm trying to lose too - have been overweight since birth of DS1, he's 8.

Don't hate yourself for it. There's still so much you can do to help yourself.

Thank you for the encouragement. My weight also piled on when my daughter was little. Endless sleepless nights led to days of constant snacking to keep going. I can do this I know I can. 💪

Easy to reverse with weight
Loss as are many issues due to weight ..

Have you considered bariatric surgery ?

I know two people who have had this when diagnosed with T2 and are normal weights now and very healthy .

Both struggles for decades with their weight .

Low carb works really well, I’ve done it myself.

Mumgineer · 12/01/2024 11:15

Hi everyone, I just wanted to come back with a quick update.
I’ve been watching what I eat and out walking most days since and have so far lost 9lbs. Not massive but a good start. I feel like I’ve a bit more energy and the worst of the side effects of the meds are gone.

That’s great, especially as it’s been Christmas! You’ve got this.

Evenstar · 12/01/2024 13:21

Well done, that’s brilliant!
