Nurse refusing to test

I'm 54 and have been experiencing blurry vision for 4 years. Not all the time - I can typically go a couple of weeks without it. At worst, I can't see myself clearly in the mirror. At best, just aware everything a bit blurry, and can't see road signs. Eye test found nothing. Clears by teatime. I asked nurse to check my cholesterol, BP, and blood sugar. BP is good. Fasting Cholesterol is 8.4. She refuses to do blood glucose test, as my BMI isn't high enough. I also informed her I get recurrent thrush, if I don't take high strength probiotics - a few days off them, and it's back. I'm told there's no rush to see a GP as my choledterol hss probably been high for a long time - I wss given appt for 6 weeks. I'm not following this logic?

That's because her logic is flawed. You don't have to be overweight to have a high blood sugar. You could try the pharmacy and see if they will test your blood sugar.

That's ridiculous- at the GP practice I work in we would absolutely test your blood sugar under these circumstances. Diabetes is very common, and not everyone who has it is overweight. Can you do an econsult at your GP practice to say specifically that you are concerned about diabetes and would like to have your hba1c checked?
I also think that 6 weeks is a pretty long wait to see the GP regarding blurry vision but the NHS is crumbling so its not surprising. Please Google 'blurred vision red flags' and seek more urgent medical advice if you develop any of the symptoms (weakness, facial drooping etc).

As a GP (not in UK) I find this bizarre. Your cholesterol is very high and if you were my patient I'd be actively looking for other conditions that increase your cardiovascular risk, like diabetes and high blood pressure. That's aside from the fact that you have symptoms.

My eyes have been doing this since my 50's. I've had every test under the sun including private tests and tests for diabetes.
I'm 62 now and wear varifocals.
It happens after I've been reading a lot, doing computer work all day or just at the end of a working day when I'm tired or even driving a long way.
Its basically eye strain. if I use high magnification glasses for reading or one of my hobbies which is making small scale miniatures I don't get blurry vision at all, and I've realised that drinking lots of water and being outside and active much more really stops it too so I've taken up hiking as a hobby.

DH has diabetes and is as skinny as a rake. He has type 1 and 2 in the family and they are all thin. (Being SE Asian is the problem in his case). As pp have said, you can't just make assumptions. Surely blurry vision as bad as you describe needs an urgent gp appointment?

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 10/12/2023 12:54

Thanks everyone, I know it seems strange not to have already seen GP re the vision, but it's because I can go a few weeks, without it happening, and optician was dismissive. When I see GP in January re cholesterol, I'll mention it again.

You can buy a blood sugar test kit from a chemist/amazon and test yourself.

I was normal bmi and had a very high reading and told I was type 2. Long story but cutting out sugar and going low carb now has me on an even keel. I'm technically now underweight and still at the top end of normal. Obesity is a factor but it's not compulsory for diabetes.
