Hi wondered if anyone here can shed some light on a healthy blood sugar level for a non diabetic adult. Internet searches vary so widely I'm not sure what to think. A few weeks back I had a middle of day glucose test and my level was 87 and recently bought a home monitor started using today before breakfast on one coffee my level was only 63 raised to about 96 after breakfast and 115 after a fizzy pop day has gone on with snacks and tea before teatime it was 76 and now 2 hours after food 86 I'm now wondering if I could be low and what this will mean for the future

86 isn't low.

Your sugars are normal. Are you American any reason why you're not checking in mmol?

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 26/09/2023 18:06

Low is below about 4mmol/L (about 70mg/dL) so your pre breakfast reading was slightly low but not really concerning. Is there a reason you’re taking your readings?

LIZS · 26/09/2023 18:17

Why are you measuring? Is it a diet fad? Apparently there has been a surge in gp appointments for unnecessary concern due to non diabetics buying cgm but not understanding the normal patterns ie. Effect of eating and carbs,

AnnaMagnani · 26/09/2023 18:39

None of those are low and tests are either done randomly or before meals so it's very hard to comment on what your results mean.

Can you say why you have started testing and what instructions you were given about testing?

Yes I have been measuring as seem to get quite weak and fatigued before food and lightheaded so have had a few blood tests etc checking for anemia etc but no cause has yet been found so I am suspicious of low sugar levels now.

Due to random episodes of weakness fatigue spinny head am not diabetic but low sugar is suspected. I was just told to check before meals and 2 hours later.

Your levels are normal. Anything between 4 and 7 is normal. Or 40 and 70. Under 4/40 is low /hypo. Do they not offer a Hba1c test in Turkey?

AnnaMagnani · 26/09/2023 19:22

Have you checked your BP lying and standing?

A large proportion of people who feel dizzy and think they have low blood sugars, actually have low BP, or at least a drop on standing.

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 26/09/2023 19:25

Have you checked during the episodes of feeling unwell?

I have had random BP checks and they have been ok. But eill give the lying down standing a go

I'm sure they have I just haven't been sent for one obviously. What is this test for and what will it tell us?

I don’t think those mg/dL figures are right. 4mmol/L is about 70mg/dL.

HbA1c shows average blood glucose over a period of time. It’s useful in tracking blood glucose control.

Have you taken a reading when you are feeling unwell? What is the lowest reading you have had?

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 26/09/2023 20:00

@IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism sorry you are very correct and i am very wrong. Apologies OP and everyone else, I'm very tired.

1 mmol/L of blood glucose is equivalent to 18 mg/dL of blood glucose. So, if you're trying to calculate mmol/L from mg/dL, you can multiply the mg/dL value by 0.0555 to get the equivalent mmol/L value of blood glucose.

4-7 mmol would be between 72 - 126 mg/dl. But now I think about it, I think in other countries (that use mg/dl) they also have different values for "normal".

My lowest reading was this morning after waking coffee and a fruit bar at 63

I have had random BP checks and they have been ok. But eill give the lying down standing a go

To do sitting / lying to standing BP, get yourself comfortable and sat / lay down for a little while, at least 5 minutes but more like 10 would be better, and then take your BP, it can sometimes be helpful to check both arms to see if there is a difference.

Stand up and immediately take your BP again, it needs to be done within a minute of standing.

If you are likely to get dizzy have someone nearby just in case.

After 3 minutes of standing up, take your BP again.

If the top number (systolic) drops by more than 20 or ends up as a number less than 90 you probably have some postural drop (change in blood pressure) significant enough to get checked out. You can check the lower number too, if this drops by more than 10, again it is worth checking but it is a less usefulness measure than the top number.

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 26/09/2023 20:56

OK that’s not really very low. How did you feel at the time? Have you tested during one of your episodes of feeling unwell?

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 26/09/2023 19:25

No as I've been putting more effort into meal times so haven't been feeling that way as often as before

OP posts:
IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 26/09/2023 22:05

Well from what you’ve written it sounds like you don’t really have a low blood sugar problem at all. Readings below 40mg/dL would be very concerning.

There are a few conditions that cause real hypoglycaemia in non-insulin treated diabetics - some medications , reactive hypoglycaemia, some metabolic disorders that would almost certainly have been evident from early childhood, and a very rare and (usually) benign kind of tumour called an insulinoma. So far you don’t appear to have any of those.

Try testing when you next feel at your worst, regardless of when it is in relation to eating.

Tested today as i felt my shakes and weakness come on before teatime and was 92 which isnt low so im lost as to why this is happening

Have you had a 24 hour blood pressure monitor test?
