Are cornflakes ok?

Hi,
I’m a borderline T2D so I know so need to cut out the crap from my diet. I’m terrible for nipping in coffee shops for tea and cake. Chocolate is another devil in my life.

Breakfast ideas I’m stuck on. Are cornflakes safe? The ones without sugar on. Or, please suggest some ideas!

I’ve just taken up kayaking and hiking to distract myself from food and to lose a bit of weight (although the nurse said I’m not overweight and actually weighed less than 3 years ago). I do need to lose a bit!

I think most cereal is sugary, even if you don’t add extra. What about Greek yoghurt? Eggs?

BritInAus · 25/07/2023 07:22

Yoghurt with berries and a small amount of low-carb granola or some nuts
Anything egg based is good
Smoothie including some fruit/veg and protein powder
Avocado on a slice of wholegrain toast
Mushrooms on a slice of toast
Omelette
a 'breakfast burrito' in a low carb wrap

I'm type 2.

I eat low carb and I have protein for breakfast.

So breakfast can be:

Fry up - not often
Cheese and cold meats - similar o what you would get in Germany or the Netherlands.
Yoghurt, sometimes with nuts.
Eggs - scrambled, boiled, fried, poached, baked, convent, hard boiled and mixed with mayo like a sandwich filling.
Nuts.
Hummus.

Cereal is not a great choice. If you're looking to quash your hunger a bit you need more protein in your diet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I like eggs and Greek yogurt so that’s a start. I’m trying not to eat bread so that’s toast out!

No. I think of my T2D as being an allergy to carbs/sugar so I don't (really) eat any food that are high GI.

Please look up Jason Fung and research fasting.

Yy to the protein options, but if you really want "breakfast" how about porridge or overnight oats? Slow release energy that should help you stay full for longer and avoid a high sugar spike?

TeaCakeandKisses · 29/07/2023 21:32

I’ve been looking around online for ideas and will try some of those out.

Thanks all!

You could look up the Glucose Goddess. She has great tips for avoiding glucose spikes. She recommends a savoury breakfast.

In fact, there was a thread discussing her advice here on MN which contains a summary of the 'hacks' she advises:
