Sugary stuff

My husband is type 2 diabetic on injections , he monitors his sugar levels very closely and keeps well under control, but, he eats a lot of cakes and biscuits and injects the right amount of insulin to counteract, is this ok? His doctor tells him he's managing his diabetes really well, but I'm not convinced what he does is right or ok long term?

If the insulin is bringing is sugar levels to the correct range then i don't see the problem (type 1 of 22 years) I eat what I want, count the carbs and inject for them.

  1. Is he putting on weight? If he is then no, it’s not a good idea. The problem with injecting more insulin to cover foods is that it can drive appetite, causing you to crave more carb, and then obviously need more insulin. A bit of a vicious circle.

  2. what are his blood pressure, cholesterol levels, liver, eye and kidney tests like? BP and cholesterol are also significant markers that need to be considered in terms of long term risk reduction in type 2 diabetes, not just blood sugar. I’d imagine he might well be increasing the likelihood of ending up with non alcoholic fatty liver disease, something more common in people with type 2 diabetes.

Does his doctor actually know that he’s eating a load of sugary crap all the time? I can’t imagine any Dr telling someone that was a great idea in respect of type 2 diabetes. Or are they just seeing his levels are fine, so not really looking at things holistically.

I don't think he's telling doctors the truth about what he eats. I don't know what his blood pressure is like, cholesterol ok I believe, he is a bit overweight.

I don't get it. Why on earth would he carry on eating cakes and sweets if he's T2D to the point of having to inject?
