How to reverse pre diabetes

Bloodsugarlevels · 25/05/2023 18:22

Hi,
i just turned 50, have fought long covid and got a bit chubbier. (BMI of 28)
thought I treat myself to a cgm device as part of a health MOT
Turns out I might be pre diabetic with a GMI of 6.0 and 42 mol/mol. My blood sugar levels don’t fall below 5.8 during sleep (and that is a good night)
having seen FIL struggle with T2, and all the drugs that come with it - can any of you give me hope as to reversing insulin resistance?
with chronic fatigue I need to be careful I don not push myself over the edge… so need to find a way that is gentle yet sustainable

thank you for handholding

Most of my meals are a protein and salad/roasted veg eg steak in peppercorn sauce with mushrooms and veg, fry up, 2 burger patties but one brioche bun etc.

I eat lots of things like chilli in a low carb wrap, or turkey taco mix (have posted it on MN before it comes up in a google search, but I substituted the rice for red lentils).

The Tuscan chicken is a recipe from Instagram:

1.) get 600g raw chicken breast and dice into cubes
2.) season with tablespoon oregano.
Tbsp olive oil, Tbsp.
Cumin and chilli flakes
3.) mix together & cook on the pan for
10-15 mins on high heat
[then on low heat add:1

1 tbsp minced garlic
1 chopped onion
1 tbsp tomato paste
200ml skimmed milk
60g low fat cream cheese
Frozen Spinach cooked in microwave (however much you'd like)
Cooked chicken
4.) Stir and let it simmer until rich and creamy. - it only takes a few mins.

The other day I had salmon cooked on papillotte (I put pesto, philli and lemon juice on it) and then when I take the fish out I mix it all to make a sauce and pour over. I had it with asparagus, mange tout and green beans.

Yum yum!!

Following as diagnosed pre diabetic.

Nofixedabodewell · 27/06/2023 17:25

Well, I’m pre diabetic and on the edge of being out on medication for HBP. Happy days. I need to lose four stone. I just don’t know where to start.

Bloodsugarlevels · 27/06/2023 17:49

@Brumbies @Nofixedabodewell
sorry to hear about your diagnoses

for my part I started walking - about 45 minutes per day
and cut out pasta, rice, all kinds of bread
still eating carbs in the form of beans and lentils and chickpeas

have upped unprocessed food intake - lots and lots of veg.

lost have a dress size - not going on the scales to keep motivation going

fingers crossed for all of us

we can do this

Thanks for all the tips all, I am 48 and also have CFS and overweight, really don't want diabetes. Food for thought!

Brumbies · 28/06/2023 06:34

Thank you Bloodsugarlevels

It's very hard to stop eating the things you enjoy, my weakness is soda bread and wine!

I walk an hour and a half several times a week and eat a pretty good diet. I do need to cut out carbs though. Don’t drink a lot. Sonr eat sugary things . It seems very unfair .

Tinybrother · 28/06/2023 09:31

I am on medication that raises my blood sugar levels (I have a monitor for it), and in terms of my own diet, I don’t use low fat products and I do use plenty of oil based dressings and put butter on veg. Fats really help with feeling full and satisfied for longer, it makes food taste better (IMO) and reduces the cravings for sweet and carbier things. I actually have to be careful with milk as that can cause a spike for me, so I often substitute double cream as that doesn’t.

My DH was the same. He stopped eating cakes, pies and biscuits and also cut right back on alcohol, he managed to get back to normal levels within 6 months. He lost one stone and has kept the weight off.

That’s reassuring. I’ve just been told I’m pre-diabetic too do need to get my act together. I eat quite a lot of sweet things (chocolate cake, Dairy Milk chocolate) and sugar levels have crept up. It doesn’t help that chocolate bars are smaller these days so I get the bigger bar (which tends to be on offer). I eat bread a lot too!!

Im hoping to lower my sugar levels in 6 months to put this into reverse!

Well done to your husband!

Brumbies · 28/07/2023 12:49

I never go above 6 so am I really pre diabetic? Usually 5.2 to 5.7

Bloodsugarlevels · 23/09/2023 16:05

Just thought I check in
had my yearly health check last week - Hba1c down to 33 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨
thank you all for getting me started and the optimism
@KisstheTeapot14 my CFS has massively improved- but then I have switched out any attempts at cardio cardio and replaced with brisk walking
but my brain fog is better - maybe the mountains of veggies and nuts are doing some good
