New pump

Hello. I am due to get a new insulin pump in a couple of months and do not know which one to get. I am currently on the Medtronic 670g pump. I am unsure whether to go onto the Medtronic 780g pump or the omnipod. Any help, advice or comments are really appreciated.

Omnipod is brilliant if you are at all squeamish about a pump tube getting snagged by your kids or on a door handle. 😊

Did you get your omnipod on the NHS. DH has been told by his consultant they aren't NHS funded

Snoodleberry · 25/04/2023 07:51

Yes, I did, but it was approved for my health area.

When I lived elsewhere in the U.K. previously I was approved for a T-slim as that was the pump that that area had approved, but I moved half way through the whole consultation process, and so had to start up with a different pump in the end. It’s a postcode lottery as to which pumps are approved for your area - which is crazy.

It's been an uphill battle to get one for DH, the consultant was adamant that they aren't approved by NHSEngland even though the guidelines say DH should be eligible.

I have an omnipod on the NHS. Some trusts only deal with certain pumps. If he wants an omnipod you are allowed to change hospitals to one that does them.

I sent an email to my diabetic nurse and she booked me into an event with different representatives and told me which companies are supported by our hospital. This was early 2020.

I only have experience of metronic pumps. I have found their customer service as excellent.

I'm due to choose again, next year.

@Layla2023 out of interest which pump did you go for and how are you getting on with it. I have been offered MM780g with guardian 4 or Dexcom G6 with either Tandem Tslim or Omnipod 5.

I have had diabetes for 60 years, been on an insulin pump for 10+, started with a medtronic, but they are quite heavy, tried the omnipod, but the patches kept coming off especially if you are in a hot country.......so now I am on the T-Slim, which is very light as has no battery, is touch sensitive and so easy to use.

I highly recommend this.
thanks

The medtronic algorithm for hybrid closed loop is the best imo. They have a new sensor coming out this year, too, which should be a big improvement on the G4.

Hi, I went for the Medtronic 780g. So far I haven't had any problems with it. It has been pretty good, and is much better at preventing lows

The T-slim works with the Dexcom G7 now, which is much better than the G6

I am the same. Been on Medtronic for over 20 years. I now have a choice to stay with it, or change to omnipod. Hospital insists you stay with chosen pump for 5 years, which feels too long, what with developments these days.

Phoned Omnipod and she was critical of my hospital saying it was one of the few who still now had that rule.

they sent me an Omnipod trial thing, but it was rubbish because it wasn't real. It was just a bit of plastic and you couldn't really try it, or plug it in, or insert, not using any insulin so it wasn't a real trial.

What happens if I choose to change over to Omnipod and then hate it and want to switch back to Medtronic, but they won't let me?

Thus, as of now I still haven't decided.

JewelBlueSea · 10/04/2024 17:52

I hate the omnipod. Been on the dash for two years and my time in range is about 20-25%. It really doesn't work for me at all.
I have been approved for the medtronic 780g and g4 as a closed loop system but until I start I have gone back to MDI.

Typicalof · 12/04/2024 06:25

It's almost time to upgrade my pump and I been offered either omnipod or metronic closed loop. I have been using metronic last eight years and when I told my doctor I would like to try the omnipod he said it is simple to switch back to metronic in case I need/ want to. He has supported another patient to do so.

It takes a long time to get another appointment. The waiting list for training to use it, is even longer. But I really want to try not having a tube/ wire.
