I'm posting about my dad who I have a difficult relationship with. He's 77 and was diagnosed 10 years ago approx. We've noticed some mild cognitive decline over the past year and he has been very low in mood for at least 3 months now. I spend very little time with him, but he came with mum for Christmas yesterday.
They arrived late as he didn't get up until just before midday.
He then drank 4 beers very quickly (unlike him) and had countless cups of tea/coffee and some water during the day. Mum says she has noticed him drinking significantly more over the past couple of weeks
He was in and out of the toilet frequently.
Then we had an awful time in the afternoon as he lost his temper with all of us over really random insignificant things. This culminated in him walking out and being found wandering the nearby streets disorientated & having been crying.
Mum doesn't think he has had a check up for several months & doesn't think he's tested his sugars since October.

So I'm thinking his diabetes is not well enough controlled with the medication he's on & that is probably causing what we saw yesterday. He will not listen to me or mum. I've said I will ring the GP on Wednesday and tell them what is going on & hope that they will call him for a check up. Do we need to be more concerned in the short term & try to do something before Wednesday? What warning signs should we look out for on top of what he's already displaying?
Any help or advice would be very welcome

he needs to get to his gp or diabetes nurse for a check up.

however, he is an adult and has to want to do that.

Get a glucose monitor. It's the only way to really know. He needs to see a gp/nurse. He could have a UTI, Kidney infection or a number of other things going on that need treatment which is currently affecting his blood sugar stability.
