Type 2 and Pregnancy

Hello all

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes many years ago but lost 13 stone and ut went into remission.

I am now 11 weeks pregnant with ny 4th child and have been told that I will be treated as a type 2 diabetic during the pregnancy.

I have been monitoring my blood glucose and noticed that after eating complex carbs my levels go into double figures. My diabetic midwife is suggesting insulin at certain mealtimes.

Can anyone tell me of their experiences taking insulin while pregnant? Were you dependent upon it after birth? Did it effect the baby in anyway? Will I NEED to be induced?

I'm very concerned?

I also suffer with health anxiety especially around breast cancer. It is sooooo high at the moment. It's to the point where I am checking 10+ times a day. It's draining I'm so drained

I had diabetes when pregnant a few years ago & was put on insulin straight away.
Like many women, my bg went crazy during pregnancy and the amount of insulin I needed went up throughout.

They told me I wouldn't need insulin after the pregnancy. This is the case for lots of people but not for me, I've been on it ever since.

The risk of stillbirth in women with diabetes are higher towards the end of pregnancy & at 38w I had to decide between induction & c-section. You can refuse, but I didn't want to take the risk.

Hope this helps.

I was on metformin before I was pregnant and then moved into insulin during pregnancy. I found it a lot better than I thought and it wasnt scary. It was useful at times if I was having a carby meal I knew I could inject a few extra units before hand to compensate and still stay in range. After the birth of my son I came off the insulin.

I was diagnosed T2 during my pregnancy and straight onto insulin and metformin. My pregnancy was fine after that and i kept my numbers well controlled. i did have a few issues with hypos though which drove me a little bit insane. my daughter was always on the smaller side though which was odd but who knows. My daughter arrived spontaneously at 34 weeks though was fit and healthy, no NICU and came home at 4 days old. they don't think it was related to the diabetes - just one of those things.

You'll likely be referred for two things later on 1. a retinal eye scan and 2. your baby will need a more in depth scan of the heart as heart defects are more common in babies with diabetic mothers. In ours they found two holes but they had healed by the time she was born anyway so don't worry too much if they do find one

Following the pregnancy i came off insulin but stayed on the metformin, a year later unfortunately my numbers had skyrocketed and they talked about putting me on other medications but none of them are safe if i want to TTC in the near future so they were considering insulin. however in just over 6 weeks i have brought my numbers down dramatically with just a strict diet- my fasting numbers were 12 in november and are now under 6 and my readings after meals aren't really going above 8. I've only lost about half a stone but already my insulin resistance is improving.

I saw the DN yesterday and they said they're thrilled and no insulin for me. I've been told I will be kept a firm eye on during my pregnancy and to call them as soon as the line turns pink and all likelihood i will be on insulin in my pregnancy no matter what but hopefully a lower dose.

I've decided to wait a bit longer to TTC to get my numbers better controlled and lose a bit more weight as i want to get my BMI under 30 before getting pregnant so hopefully less dramatic than the last one.

@Bells3032 congratulations on your great results and good luck TTC. In currently trying to bring my numbers down too so we can try for baby number 2.
