Finger prick test readings

My DH was having symptoms and wanted to check his sugar levels. He done the finger prick test and all was okay - his was in the green range according to the chart.

I done it out of curiosity and was shocked to see mine in the red range (it was 17. Something). I thought maybe just ate too much sugar that day.

tried a few weeks later and again it was in the red range.

I wanted to try and see what it was like after a long fast. I am trying to do intermittent fasting for 18:6 hours split. I tested this morning after an 18 hour fast and it is 5.9 which still seems “high” after a fast.

so I am healthy, 30, 9 stone so not over weight don’t smoke etc. no real symptoms did have tiredness but that has improved recently. Should I see if a GP would be concerned or have I worried myself unnecessarily

Did you test shortly after eating or drinking?
you need to test two hours after eating.

Did you have anything on your fingers? It can mess up the reading (eg DH sometimes has hypo symptoms and has a sweet or glucose tablet, and then pricks and gets a high reading. Then he washes his hands and gets a low reading. So we think he had sugary residue on his hands).

But your readings do seem high (not so much the fasting one, but the others). DH was 34 at diagnosis, a little overweight but not obese, reasonably fit and active. So it can happen to younger people. He’s type 2 (now on long-acting insulin).

17 is really high and suggests that you have diabetes. Please see a medic as soon as possible- go to an urgent treatment centre today ideally as untreated type 1 can be fatal.

I meant to say, you should definitely see a doctor. I think type 1 is unlikely with that fasting reading, but you do need to get tested properly.

@Crystaly did you ever get checked?
