Newly diagnosed child

I’m in hospital with my newly diagnosed child. It’s been a complete whirlwind but I think we’re getting there and starting to understand carb counting.

Can anyone recommend some low carb snacks, that we don’t need to use with insulin.

Or any tips that help. TIA.

There's a low carb boot camp thread on here with some amazing meals and snacks that are low low carb.

My understanding is things like cheese, low sugar veg and fruits, yoghurt, meats etc. I tend to stick to cheese, cream cheese and meat roll up type snacks. Cucumber cheese etc.

I would use the low carb boot camp on here for any advise ,especially a child!

Dont you have access to a dietician or diabetes nurse? or go on the diabetes.org forum. Dont use diabetes.co,uk that is a private company that sells the low carb diet. DIabetes.org is the diabetes charity and will have better advice.

If you are on Facebook, join diabetes and the low carb life group
They have albums of recipes, and are a very warm and loving group - although a bit sweary and a love of puffins!!

Sara who is the creator of the group does zoom training on carb counting - she is a teacher and just charges a small fee for this, but it will help immensely! A lot of the group are parents of T1 children as well

Seeing a diabetes nurse will help. They explain that you shouldn’t need to change your diet, it’s about adjusting the insulin to suit what you want to eat.

It’s really confusing to be newly diagnosed- I got a type 1 diagnosis in March so it’s early days for me. I’m still getting to grips with it all. lots of things effect levels but it’s much easier with a libre or similar monitor.

Hi. T1 parent here also.

First thing to say is that it will get easier over time. It is extremely stressful for everyone, especially the child, at the beginning but in time you all learn to live with it, it becomes less frightening and more a way of life. The tech makes life so much easier but you need to learn the basics first.

Yes cheese, yoghurt, nuts, salami, cut up veg, berries etc.

But things that will let your child still feel like a kid and that they can still have treats are diet fizzy drinks, slushies (are usually diet but you can test them with a strip and monitor if in doubt), the small multi pack crisps that aren't potato that are corn based or like Skips are less than 10g, 2 finger Kit Kats are about 10g and generally any wafer based biscuits.

Watch their well-being over the first while and allowing them to enjoy meals and snacks without dinner being a major undertaking if you can.

Nobody understands just how hard it is unless they've been there so ignore all the well meaning advice and listen to your nurse/dietician/doc.

One thing I majorly regret is letting my son see my own anxiety, and standing there while I explained the diagnosis drama to friends etc. Not my finest moments.

But 5 years on he is completely fine, doesn't let it get in the way of anything he wants to do.

Thanks for all the advice, we’re home and slowly adjusting to it. We’ve been giving snacks such as ham, nuts, carrot sticks (unfortunately they don’t like cucumber so that sort of thing isn’t an option!). Blood sugars are very up and down but our team have been fantastic so far.

Nuts will reduce blood sugar

@WellWhoWouldHaveThought Search for a T1 parent Facebook group and you'll get loads of tips there. Hopefully you are not too stressed and are able to sleep etc. important you look after yourself as well.
