How many does you gp prescribe if you test 4 times a day?

It depends whether you're Type 1 or 2. I didn't think Type 2 were prescribed them any more unless newly diagnosed . I've been buying my own for years and test when I get up or if I've eaten something I'm unsure of , as wouldn't need to .

bruffin · 08/10/2022 16:32

Im type 2 but on insulin, diagnosed in april. Supposed to test 4 times a day and am getting 100 test strips at a time which is not even 4 weeks supply atm

Sorry , it didn't occur to me you were on insulin as that's really unusual for someone to be on it when newly diagnosed as Type 2.

I would tell your GP. you need 120/124 strips for a month . If they won't supply them , they sell meters and strips cheaply in homehealth-uk.com

Lilbunnyfufu · 08/10/2022 17:01

I need to test 5 times a day and some days more and the doctor only prescribes 100 at a time.

NCnotmyusualone · 09/10/2022 10:56

Do you have a specialist nurse? If so can you ask them to write to your gp advising them that you need sufficient blood test strips to test 4 times a day, plus extras for more testing if hypo/unwell/before driving.

Alternatively make a written case for this yourself, setting out the number of tests required in a day to keep both you and others (if you drive) safe. This resource pack might help..

DH used to get 200 a month. We have moved now and he is on Libre. My friend is the local diabetes nurse and puts all her patients on Libre whenever possible as with bulk purchasing she has worked out it is the same price as for people who test 3 x daily so ultimately saves money if people test more than that and gives better control as you have so much more info plus the ease of it hugely increases quality of life.

Thank you
The hospital only gave me 20 when i left so i had to buy some until my gp got the notes from hospital.

I have then had 4 prescriptions since diagnosis and was given 200 the first 2 prescriptions and 100 the last 2 prescription, so i was wondering what was the norm
I always seem to be at the chemist collecting medication atm!

I have just found on gp website a request for synchronization of medication and made a note on that i still need to test 4 x daily plus and could i have them with my other medications which are metformin and felodipine. DH gets 2 months supply at a time for his medications , but for some reason i only get 1 months supply.

I get 5 insulin pens at a time which now last me nearly 3 months so not a problem.

Noted that you're type 2 but on insulin very early - have you been tested for LADA/ type 1.5? Do you have any autoimmune disorders?

I'm freshly diagnosed but so freshly I haven't finished being tested to find out what I have. But it may be 1.5.

Am rather shocked the GPs seem to be prescribing fewer strips than are needed.

bruffin · 09/10/2022 13:06

Basically what happened was i went to GP because i thought i had a UTI.
I hadnt eaten for a few days and was sleeping all the time, i had been sick once and got the shakes a few days before. Took a dip test and my BG was 26 and ketones 1.7 so got sent straight to a&e. I spent a day in resus being rehydrated then a week in hospital. They said i had DKA without the A, plus an infection.
I was diagnosed with diabetes but they were unsure whether it was type 1 or 2.
I was on 3 different intravenous antibiotics and started insulin and metformin.

I had a gad test but only told results diagnosed me as type 2 in August. I had been under the care of the hosptial diabetic nurse who called me weekly then discharged me to my GP, I was sending her a report of BG from my monitor
. I have had 1 phone appointment with dietitian in August. I have seen the diabetic nurse at GP a few times, but that was mainly because my BP was sky high and had to start medication for that.

I had a Hab1c in August which was 39, so they think i am producing some insulin again, but i have been really good with my diet, no added sugar and wholemeal instead of white etc and my insulin has reduced from 32 units a day to 18.
Nobody has mentioned type 1.5 but i have not had an outpatients appointment since i was discharged from hospital, although discharge notes said i should be seen within 3 months.
I am going back to diabetic nurse at GP in february when i have my next Hab1c.

I think the problem is i have been managing too well! BG mainly 5 and 6s and very rarely above 7, so been left to get on with it really

I'm type 1 and I order my test strips through the Nhs app to pick up at my local pharmacy as and when I need them.
I get 150 every order and and have never had a limit on how many I can have.

FlipFlops4Me · 25/11/2022 12:29

Yes, I'm T1 and just get as many as I need/ask for. Never had a problem. I test about 4 times a day, more if I'm high or low for any reason and need to correct. You're also supposed to test before driving and not drive if you're below 5. I don't drive so I've never had to worry about getting strips to cover that.

passmeapepsi · 25/11/2022 12:47

Type 1 and get 200

bruffin · 25/11/2022 13:41

I don't drive so that is not an issue

I get 200 test strips at a time. I’m MOD. But if I’m ill I know I need more test strips, as my BG are all over when I’m sick.
I have been known to order extra test strips midway through my prescription. Never been refused by my GP.
I normally test once or twice a day but if I’m poorly it can be 4/6 times.

bruffin · 10/12/2022 11:34

I've asked for 150 to his time,
