Do you have to have an unhealthy lifestyle to have type 2?

My GP is sending me for blood tests to check my hormone levels and also to check for diabetes as I’ve been having some horrible symptoms that could indicate that either or both are a problem. He said that my symptoms indicate diabetes more than perimenopause but that he’s be surprised if I have it as I’m a healthy weight, have a relatively healthy diet, am active and have no family history of it. He doesn’t think I have type 1 - if anything it would be type 2. Is it possible to have type 2 if you’re fairly healthy with no family history of it? (Tests aren’t for a couple of weeks as I can’t get a blood test appointment until then).

Thanks so much - that is really interesting. I do have autoimmune issues anyway so we shall see.

type 1 can occur in people
with other autoimmune conditions. Sometimes it’s slow to progress. Your Gp can check autoantibodies or refer you to someone that can if there is a suspicion

My late grandfather was scrupulously healthy and developed type 2 diabetes later in life, to everyone’s surprise. So I would say, yes, it’s possible.

My mum developed type 2 in her 50s. She's never been overweight in her life, has a healthy diet, walked everywhere, non smoker, drinks very little etc. Now she's in her 70s and probably under 8 stone, she's tiny. Several medical professionals over the years have exclaimed surprise when she walks in to their office as she does not look anything like a stereotypical type 2 diabetic they see.

She has had rheumatoid arthritis since her 30s or 40s though, and more recently type 1.5 diabetes has been mentioned to her which makes sense given the information from bruffin above.
