Hello! Long story short just wondering if anyone with diabetes can give me some help, everyday I've been feeling abit "funny" now and again I would feel better sometimes after eating and sometimes not, I had a feeling it was my blood sugars, when I felt funny I check my blood sugars it was low, I'd eat something sweet and it went up to normal, tonight I checked my blood sugars an hour after I eaten which was 7.6 and now 3 hours later I've done it again and it's 7.8? Is this normal? When I've been checking it's been either fairly low or high? Thanks again

I’m a newly diagnosed diabetic, so I’m not an expert by any means, but the best course of action would be to make an appointment with your GP & get a haemaglobin A1c (HbA1c) fasting blood test. This will show the amount of glucose bound to your red blood cells, and as red blood cells live for 90 days, it can show a 3 month view of how your body is dealing with glucose.

My Diabetic nurse said to check my glucose level 2 hours after eating, as this is when the glucose level from my meal would be highest. So, if you tested at 1 hour, it’s perfectly possible that your glucose level will be higher on your hr 2 test, even if you haven’t eaten anything else.

Remember, your blood glucose level will naturally rise & fall during the day, depending on loads of factors (what you eat, how long since you’ve last eaten, if you’re stressed, are ill etc.). It’s why testing is only recommended if advised by your nurse/GP.

Now, I’m only a couple of weeks into my diagnosis (picked up on a routine medication blood test, although I’d felt bloody awful for months), but your levels look within the range my nurse has given me.

I’m just a diabetes n00b & I’m sure someone further along their journey could give much better advice, but I suggest visiting the GP if you are concerned, or have other symptoms like frequent urination, thirst, fatigue etc.

Hoping you feel better soon & get some better answers from your GP than this old moo can give lol!

I've not eaten yet today and it's 4.8 which is normal, but it's when I eat hours later it's really high and goes higher must've gotten lower during the night as I've not had anything apart from drinks

When you say really high, how high is that? I was diagnosed in December, had lost 15kg, horrifically thirsty, peeing all the time and awful leg cramps.

My hba1c was 111 (I think 50+ is diabetic) and my blood sugars were sitting in the high 20s...

LIZS · 01/07/2022 12:16

HBAC1 is 48+ for type 2. You normally need two tests three months apart for a diagnosis. Random spikes will occur in everyday life.

hazelnutlatte · 01/07/2022 12:22

Blood sugar rising after eating is completely normal and is what is expected to happen. If your fasting blood sugar is normal it is unlikely you are diabetic. Its worth going to the GP and explaining your symptoms and having some blood tests though.

mumsnetter123 · 01/07/2022 12:49

Thanks everyone. I will go doctors I'm aware it's normal to have random spikes through the day and after eating etc, maybe it's due to stress at work because it mostly happens then, I will go doctors anyway

I have just been diagnosed in April with the additional complication of an infection and ended up in hospital for a week with blood sugar of 26 and ketones of 1.7. GP sent me straight to a&e . I had DKA without the A.
They put me straight onto insulin and metformin.
I got the shakes initially when my BG was about 6 but now when it is low 4s.
I use the Diabetes M app at the moment . BG is mostly 5 and 6s with odd 7 and only was 8 once. It forecasts my Hbac1 to be 37. It is linked to the app for my Glucomen aero meter so picks up the readings.

7.6 and 7.8 after eating is not diabetes.

Feeling funny when you have low blood sugar and having something sweet to eat and feeling better is not diabetes.

Somewhere along the line people have got confused with diabetic people getting their insulin levels wrong and ending up with dangerously low blood sugar with a symptom of diabetes itself.

Diabetes is chronically high blood sugar. A finger prick test of 11 or over is suggestive of diabetes but it can only be diagnosed with an HbA1c test.

No problem thankyou, I asked as I didn't know. I am about to do my blood sugar training at work also which clearly is needed lol, thanks again
