3 year old with symptoms but no glucose in urine

My 3yo is thirsty (not constantly but is drinking say 2+ litres a day and waking in the night for a drink) he is peeing like no body's business. Yesterday he had 17 wee's all day. Today he was in nursery and I was about to ask whether he was weeing a lot when she said he'd had 2 accidents (unlike him) and peeing quite a lot.
He is also eating like never before. He's never been a big eater but the last 3/4 days he hasn't stopped. Have weighed him but don't think he's lost any weight.

I have home urine tests and there is no glucose in his urine. So this means he definitely doesn't have diabetes? Is that right?

I think you might also need a finger prick of blood glucose levels as a double check. Anything above 11 on a finger prick two hours after eating would be a probable diagnosis I think.
Usually a urine dip would show sugars present too mind you. Are you sure your home test strips are in date/working?

Would be tempted to call 111 and see if they can get you up to hospital to get checked as a precaution. Type 1 in kids can become really serious incredibly quickly and hospital staff would understand that. If your gut instinct is telling you something's off then I'd be inclined to treat it as a possible emergency.

Hopefully you've had it checked out. Drinking that much isn't normal and does signify an issue. Trip to doctors absolutely necessary, to eliminate diabetes if anything. As pp said it can escalate rapidly and if it was you'd want it caught as early as possible.

A home urine test doesn't tell you much - you can't assume anything from one negative glucose test. Take him to the A+E or to the doctor, a three year old's health needs more than a home checkup.

A urinary tract infection can also cause increased frequency and accidents that would not normally happen due to urgency. Call your Dc’s gp and ask to be seen today.

Please get this checked asap, OP. Diabetes isn't the only potentilly serious possibility here.

@stompstompy OP, I had similar concerns about my 17 month old a few weeks back. He was drinking lots, peeing lots and had a sweet smelling breath!
I called my GP first thing and they asked me to hand in a urine sample (preferably first morning urine) ASAP so that it could be tested.
I’d take a sample this morning then call the GP when they open. I was advised that if there was any traces found in the urine that they would then ask him to come in to have bloods done.
My DS actually turned out to have a viral infection just starting so he was just a bit out of sorts but definitely better to be checked. Fingers crossed it’s something similar for yours!

Thanks for your responses everyone.
I took him to see GP on Tuesday who did a urine test and said it was negative so not diabetes.
He's still eating LOADS and weeing at least 13/14 times a day so GP said to monitor and come back if it doesn't resolve itself in the next week or so.
He didn't do a finger prick as said it wasn't necessary as no glucose in urine.

Thanks for advice to get checked. I'm an over anxious person when it comes to his health so quite often think I'm seeing things when there isn't anything to see.
