Vitamin B12 and Hba1c levels

So I had the dreaded call from my GP advising my levels were 50mmol in my last test. I went for my annual glucose test in addition to a routine blood test. My vitamin b12 levels are low as well for which I’ll be put on medication. This has come as a shock so I’ve been busy checking online for more info. I’ll be going for a fasting glucose test shortly. Does the above result mean I’m definitely diabetic or can this be prediabetes as my GP wasn’t ready to confirm either. Will I need another Hba1c test to diagnose as I don’t have any symptoms really? I’ve also read low folate levels can interfere with hba1c results. Grateful for any advice as am a nervous wreck now.

They are likely to retest you in 3 months before confirming anything. This would be time for your B12 medication to take effect and you'll be able to see if it impacts your hba1c result. It also gives you time to lose a but of weight if you need to and/or adopt a healthier way of eating, if you need to. A hba1c of 50 would put you in the diabetic range, although only just, so you would stand a good chance of reversing things and may not need to go on any medication.

50 is diabetic range. 42-47 is Pre diabetic. 47- high risk of full diabetes.
We usually don't rely on one test alone when reading is in certain ranges but over 48 is more than likely to be diabetes, though they'll likely order a further test to make sure it's not an anomaly.
