Pre-diabetes?

I did a health test recently with work, I’ve never had any issues with glucose levels before but this had an ‘amber’ flag next to it and the level is 5.6. There was no other advice on the document so I had to google what it meant - seems 5.6 is just outside the normal range and I could be pre-diabetic?! Has anyone else had this?

I’m not overweight but I do have PCOS and have birth to a large baby (9.8) both of which apparently leave me at risk of developing diabetes which I wasn’t aware of!

Did you have gestational diabetes when you were pregnant? That's more likely if you have PCOS and if it's uncontrolled can lead to a big baby. I had GD (and have PCOS) and was very closely monitored for baby's growth and had to have a very restricted diet in pregnancy to control it. I now have a 1/3 chance of developing diabetes and get a blood test every year to check. So far, I've been fine, but it's something I'm aware may become a problem in the future.

No I didn’t, I did the test but it wasn’t the standard glucose test I did with my first as it was right at the beginning of Covid so we couldn’t stick around the hospital so perhaps it was missed? As baby was huge!

I had the tests and passed and I had a massive baby 11 lbs. I think I must of developed it late on.

I did have GD diagnosed with my second only picked up on a low placenta scan at 32 weeks. I passed the tests again at 28 weeks. So did the diet.

I need to do it now, basically cut the refined sugars like biscuits and sweets and eat lower carb or food combine fats with carbs to prevent bliss spikes. It's quite interesting, I found it ok but I love biscuits and the motivation isn't as strong when your not pregnant 🍪

I’d contact your gp and ask for your hba1c to be checked, that will confirm if your pre diabetic. If you are you can make dietary changes to lower your hba1c level.

Thanks this is really helpful. Also I didn’t fast before the test as wasn’t asked to - does that make a difference?

Yep, my GD wasn't diagnosed until 32 weeks and then accidentally - went in for monitoring for reduced movement and they tested my wee at same time and found sugar, so then went for test. If that hadn't happened it wouldn't have been picked up for a few more weeks still.
Your GP can run the blood test to check - you don't have to fast before it. It's the same test I now have every year to double check.
