Is this my life now?

Hi

Waiting on my blood test results, but pretty sure I have developed diabetes based on my symptoms over the past fortnight: thirst, weeing all the time, leg cramps...

I am worried about the future, but I have a much more immediate issue.

Between needing the loo at night and now leg cramps, I haven't slept through the night in two weeks. My job is full-time and stressful at the moment, and the constant tiredness is so debilitating.

Will I ever have a full night's sleep again? If I could sleep I would be able to cope with it all so much better.

Is this my life now?

TIA

Once medication is sorted, you'll sleep again.

You won't need to get up to wee as your body won't be working hard to remove the excess sugar (not technical terms!).

I was up 5 or 6 times a night before I got diagnosed. Now, it's just once and that's my age I think!! I'm 50. The thirst and tiredness goes too.

Hang in there. It will get better.

*ItsOnLikeDonkeyKong"

Thanks for the reassurance. In your experience, how quickly can medication be sorted?

Is this T1 or T2?

romdowa · 24/04/2021 08:52

Once you get your blood sugars into normal levels then the constant peeing should ease up. You may still go slightly more than normal but nothing like when your sugars are unregulated.

@hamstersarse

Don't know yet.

Dh is in the process of being checked out for T2. He read about reversing it and has put himself on A low carb diet and has slept better than he has in years.
(Not medical
Advice as he’s just read up on things from Diet Doctor and Michael Mosely)

My meds were prescribed within a week then tweaked. I began to feel better quickly.

#ItsOnLikeDonkeyKong. Thank you, that's good to know. I thought it might take months.

@ItsOnLikeDonkeyKong I can't seem to tag you properly!

My fat fingers, not a technical issue

My sugar is high and there's ketones in my urine. So I'm spending the night in A&E on a drip. Such fun.

Oh no, have they decided of it's T1 or T2 yet?

Fairyflaps · 28/04/2021 11:56

I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, having similar symptoms to yourself. It was the blurry vision and having to get up several times a night to pee that sent me to the Drs for a blood test. I had to spend 2 days in hospital being monitored for high blood sugar and ketone levels.

Since then I have been on medication and on a low carb/low sugar diet. You will be relieved to know that the getting up at night to pee was one of the first symptoms to clear up. Having high blood sugars is in itself tiring, and as I am bringing my sugar levels down through medication and diet, I am feeling less tired.

It is still a lot to get your head round, and a lot of information to take on board at once. If you turn out to have type 1 diabetes (the insulin controlled sort) it is probably even more to have take on board.

How are you doing now @Worriedunwell ?

I was diagnosed in February and it is a lot to get your head round. Diabetes.org has some great resources though and i found them really helpful.
