Excessive drinking

I’ve realised my son is drinking too much (I think) I hadn’t realised he’s drinking so much water at school - 2.4 to 3 litres and then a lot at home too. We have to give in a urine test to the GP this week but I can’t settle for worrying. He’s also always tired and struggled to walk far. He’s also wetting himself a bit too.
He had a diabetes check last year that came back fine but I’m worried. Does this sound like diabetes symptoms? Or maybe something else? Hopefully we’ll get answers either way this week 🤞🏻

Is he also going to toilet more? Tired, thinner? If this much drinking is out of the ordinary and your mums instinct has kicked in then I'd want to test sooner than later. I would pop to chemist and get glucose urine strips. Or if you know someone with a meter quick finger prick. Wouldn't wait too long to find out/eliminate, particularly if GP is going to take a while for any results. Fingers crossed it's nothing, but for piece of mind you need to know. I felt silly calling about my DD drinking/weeing more, and being told to go to A&E. But I'm hindsight glad I didn't wait for things to go more downhill.

Thanks @Butterfly44, yes definitely tired all the time but has been for some time. Can’t walk far and always have to take water with as he can’t seem to last without. I’m not sure about thinner, he’s always been a skinny thing so hard to tell. I’m going to drop a urine sample off at the GP this morning, I’m just hoping that there is another explanation.

There is also a condition called diabetes insipidus which is actually nothing to do with diabetes mellitus. It’s main symptoms are excessive urination and thirst. Just as something you could ask about if his urinalysis is not showing positive for glucose. I hope you find some answers ASAP.

@Crazycatstory thanks for the info, that’s very interesting. I haven’t heard from the GP today so I’m guessing that the urine sugars were fine. They’re also being sent off to the lab but it’ll be a few days for the results. He’s drunk approx 3.5 litres already today - I’m sure that’s not normal Shock

Reading about it, I’m not sure it could be diabetes insipid as it says urine is colourless - his was actually quite dark this morning considering the amount he’s drinking.

@Star8181 how's he doing? Was everything ok? Got fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for asking @Butterfly44. I didn’t hear back from the GP so guessing that means his urine was clear of sugar. So I’ll have to wait a few days for the lab results. We’ve also got a referral to urology but goodness knows how long that will be. He drank around 4 litres yesterday, it’s crazy!

Diabetes symptoms =the 4 Ts - thirsty, toilet ( increased urination) , tired , thinner.
Hope you've had the all clear but please make sure GP has followed up results as the symptoms sound suspicious. Some Gps are not very clued up about type 1 diabetes diagnosis in children. If any doubts please make sure you get a finger prick test for glucose in blood .
