Hypoglycemia?

Hi everyone.

Apologies if this isn't in the right place. I haven't been diagnosed. I was just wondering if it was worth going to the doctors?

I took my blood sugar yesterday at work as I was feeling groggy and hungry it was 3.7 this was 3 hours after eating.

I go pale, feel shaky, dizzy, tired a lot, easily irritated, I have to eat often. I sometimes get palpitations and I have nearly fainted a few times (eyes start to sting and I lose vision, my whole body goes weak) although this is only a few times a year but it has affected my work.

I'm 26. Is it worth going to the doctors? I currently eat every 2-4 hours whilst im awake.

Hi, undiagnosed/untreated diabetes usually results in abnormally high blood sugar rather than low, so not likely to be diabetes. The low sugar level should still be checked out though regardless 😊

Thank you for your reply. I work in Health Care so I'm aware of that. I just didn't know whether or not it was worth getting checked out or not 😊

If it's something you've noticed then yes go to the doctor so they can do blood tests. Can't really diagnose what it could be. It's normal people to have low blood sugar from time to time. Low cortisol can cause some of those symptoms for example

You can get strong fluctuations in blood sugar

I think both lots of sugar or lots of sugar free food can lead to an insulin rush that can cause drop your sugar ( I amn't a Doctor ) . Can you even out or reduce your sugar/simple carbs/sugar replacements

LindaEllen · 30/09/2020 18:55

Definitely worth going. Your blood sugar shouldn't be that low 3 hours after eating. What are you like when you wake up?

RealistSH · 30/09/2020 19:17

@LindaEllen I contacted the doctors today and spoke with a nurse practitioner. She seemed more concerned about my dizziness. I had to bring the blood sugar up a couple of times. She asked if diabetes is in the family (which it isn't).

I'm really sleepy when I wake. Struggle to wake up. Always hungry too, I have to eat straight away.

They're checking my iron levels and running a couple more tests. I've been drained and pale all day.

Hi @RealistSH did you ever get to the bottom of the cause your symptoms? I'm having the exact same issue and it's happened 5 times in the last 2 weeks. Can't seem to go a few hours without eating and needing sugars/carbs to stop the shaking.

This has also happened to me lots and I don’t know why .

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 13/08/2021 21:33

If you genuinely have a low blood sugar (not just feeling shaky) this does need investigation. Don’t take no for an answer. There are several possible reasons, but my DH was diagnosed with an insulinoma after investigations. It’s a benign (usually) tumour of the pancreas. He had surgery and is OK now.

Flossie44 · 23/09/2021 21:11

My dd gets hypos a lot. Down to 1.9! Apparently it’s an insulin sensitivity. So if she eats anything sweet, her body panics and releases too much insulin, so she crashes.

Reactive hypoglycaemia? Sounds like u need to see an endocrinologist
