Diabetes Symptoms?

Chels182 · 04/08/2020 23:02

Hello!

I’m usually a mumsnet lurker, so sorry if this is all mumbled!

Lately I have not been feeing myself at all, and the past few days it seems my symptoms are getting becoming more frequent and I decided to have a google today.

For a few months I’ve been going to the loo A LOT more, I used to be able to go in the morning and then not go for a few hours, til past lunch time if I had to. I would go before bed and sleep straight through! Now I go probably go 3/4 times in the night, and every hour in the day. The past few days it’s been smelling how I can only describe as Sugar puffs but I put it down to not drinking enough so I’ve been drinking more. Now I can’t stop drinking and my mouth feels like sandpaper..

I’ve been getting dizzy spells, completely random whether I’m standing or sitting and my eyes go blurry (I always just thought it was because I was tired) and even right now I just feel off! Like spaced out? Tired?

Sometimes one of my legs go slightly numb too.

Are these signs? I always get a little anxious about going to the GP, can I get a blood sugar test at the pharmacy?

Sounds like textbook diabetes to me, I would go see your GP asap

NervousInYorkshire · 04/08/2020 23:08

Yes they could be symptoms- I have type 2 and my eyesight goes blurry when my blood sugars are too high, along with all the other symptoms. Your pharmacy or GP are both OK to speak to, I'm not sure what type of test each would offer (and I guess that if the pharmacy one came up suggesting diabetes then you'd have to go to your GP anyway).

Wolfgirrl · 04/08/2020 23:11

Textbook diabetes. I have type 1 and recognise everything you just said. Please get yourself to A&E, they can diagnose it really easily but if it is type 1 you risk DKA. Please DM me if you have any questions x

Chels182 · 04/08/2020 23:18

Thank you everyone for replying!

I will get checked out asap.

I also forgot to note I’m extremely irritable at times too, I’ve always put everything down to just tiredness.. but that’s a symptom! 🙁

NervousInYorkshire · 04/08/2020 23:31

Irritability can show up as a symptom of both high and low blood sugar episodes- and yep, tiredness too.
After reading Wolfgirrl's post, I think a&e is probably a better idea.

I hope you manage to get it checked out as soon as you can OP, and that you're ok.

eggofmantumbi · 05/08/2020 06:19

Get to A&E OP. really really sounds like t1 (was diagnosed myself 2 years ago)

1940s · 05/08/2020 07:08

Are you overweight at the moment?

Chels182 · 06/08/2020 00:02

Currently in A&E atm, was so anxious to go, feel like I shouldn’t because there is worse off? I’m the type of person if I think something is wrong I’ll put it down to not eaten.. dehydrated etc to put myself off getting checked which i know is bad!

I went to book a consultation with my GP which is all online, Most of it was typed just a few questions of how it’s progressed.. the last one asked “please tick symptoms that are worryingn you the most” and tiredness and urinating often and thirsty were the only 2 I felt fit so chose them and it said go to A&E or call 999 😐 so I thought okay, I’ll ring 111.

I did, he basically put it down to an infection, prescribed antibiotics, then got the phone call for what pharmacy it would be going to. This was at 9:45pm. It was a late night one closing at 10:30 so I went there, they couldn’t find it on their system so I explained what it was for and the pharmacist then said he would usually tell someone to go to GP ASAP if not A&E so here I am waiting. @1940s I’m not overweight, I’m 5’6 and about 9 stone something, average and slim build. I’d say I’ve lost a little over lockdown, not a lot but I haven’t had an appetite AT ALL. Today also just been weeing loads and so lightheaded, had to tell my bf to slow down and he was only doing 40 in the car.

I hope it’s not diabetes ofc but I hope it’s something as I’d hate to waste the hospital’s time 😞

Glad you're getting it checked out - I was wondering earlier how you were doing. Keeping stuff crossed for you that it's something simple and not diabetes.

Trisolaris · 06/08/2020 00:07

Sounds classic type 1 to me. I can relate to everything you are saying from when I was diagnosed.

Hope you get seen soon!

Pixxie7 · 06/08/2020 00:26

Type 2 diabetes is insidious, type 1 more dramatic. How old are you? Type 1 usually presents in childhood to late teens. If your weight is stable type 1 unlikely as you usually get a dramatic associated weight loss not seen in type 2 which is normally with being overweight.

NervousInYorkshire · 06/08/2020 00:36

When I got my t2 diagnosis in my early thirties, I was underweight if anything - I think that's why I was so shocked by it (prior to that, I'd always wrongly assumed that you had to be overweight to develop it. Not helped after either by diabetic nurses going 'but you're young and thin!', as though that somehow changed anything).

These days I am no longer young, and no longer thin (but within a healthy weight range), so it doesn't come up any more Hmm

Chels182 · 06/08/2020 01:11

I have always thought it is partially down to weight too, not so much Type 1 as I know a few people are their ideal weight and have T1! But my cousin got it very young about 11/12 and she’s always been a little overweight.. and I thought it was just a young thing as well but read a lot on here that it’s not the case - hoping it’s not and trying not to think it is.
@NervousInYorkshire Thank you! That’s stranger you were underweight! Never heard of that for t2! I guess it’s literally just a “happens to anybody” now!

@Trisolaris how old were you when you were diagnosed? I’m 25 so I feel like it may not be.

@Pixxie7 I would say it’s stable, or was - been more up and down. I’ve definitely lost some but not a lot!

NervousInYorkshire · 06/08/2020 01:40

I'll correct myself ;I've just had a look at a BMI chart, and I was the low end of 'healthy' but not in the 'underweight' category, when I was diagnosed.

I've been lighter since, and heavier too. I've never been in the 'overweight ' category though, even at my heaviest.

eggofmantumbi · 06/08/2020 01:44

Glad you're at A&E OP. I was 33 when I was diagnosed type 1. Lots of surprise from medical staff still now, but it's a random disease really!
Try not to scare yourself too much reading.
Hope you're seen quickly x

Trisolaris · 06/08/2020 08:22

I was 25!

Trisolaris · 06/08/2020 08:22

And had lost weight but not dramatically

Chels182 · 06/08/2020 11:06

No diabetes!

But no infection either 🤷🏻‍♀️ Or low iron, he really wasn’t sure what it is, so im going to go to my GP if this still goes on.. possibly more of a bladder issue

Chels182 · 06/08/2020 11:07

But thank you everyone for responding! Really appreciated it! xx

BIWI · 06/08/2020 11:09

What's your diet like? Is it very carb-heavy? That could explain some of the symptoms - if you're eating loads of carbs, you can end up with unstable blood sugar, which can make you feel shit.

(Doesn't explain the constant weeing though!)

Wolfgirrl · 06/08/2020 11:12

Gosh I am surprised at how relieved I feel for you! I was quite convinced you had it from your symptoms, but phew. See if you can get a blood test at the GP just in case there is something else at play. Take care.

eggofmantumbi · 06/08/2020 11:26

Really happy for you! I mean it's not the end of the world but it's not fun either!

Chels182 · 06/08/2020 11:56

@BIWI I’d say it’s better than before lockdown, used to eat a lot of fast food or just quick meals but been cooking and eating healthier and can’t stand the sight of mcdonalds or takeaways! But I do love sweet treats now and then, I don’t drink fizzy drinks anymore, I prefer cordial or flavoured water? Is their anything specific I should avoid?

@Wolfgirrl Thank you! I was convinced myself and my cousin! Bit annoyed there isn’t a straight forward answer for the constant going to the loo and Dizziness! But I will ask for one again with my GP to make sure.

@eggofmantumbi
no it’s not fun! but thank you!

BIWI · 06/08/2020 11:57

Are you eating a lot of bread/pasta/rice/biscuits/cake etc?

NervousInYorkshire · 06/08/2020 13:59

Really glad to hear it's not diabetes - good luck with getting to the bottom of whatever it is!
