Did anyone gain abdominal fat after gestational diabetes

I had my 2nd baby 4 months ago and I am still really massive around my abdomen. I'm not unrealistic, but for example on my first baby I couldn't pull my shorts up as my weigh gain was all over. This time same shorts can pull them up,but I look like an average build
person who is 5 months pregnant.

I had gestational diabetes in this pregnancy which wasn't picked up until 34 week. I was tested at 28 weeks and was clear, so it developed at some point between then. I had a scan at 34 weeks due to measuring big and then a glucose test. I had measured big throughout though. I did diet control and baby was born overdue at 8llb 5oz so ok.

I have considered it might be slightly impacted by weak abdominals, but I was active during pregnancy and since. Has anyone experienced this?

I was gestational and have not managed to get rid of a gross handy belly since having my son 3 years ago. Didn't have it before!

I've had GD in both pregnancies. No weird belly fat either time. I'm 3 weeks post birth at the moment and my belly is soft still but normal size. I can wear my pre pregnancy normal jeans. Once I can start exercising at 6 weeks, I fully envisage it becoming flatish and vaguely toned (not washboard abs or anything). GD affects amount of sugar in the blood, meaning baby got the extra sugar, not you.

Sorry name changed ..but the amount of sugar in the blood would affect you as well as the baby. Diabetes is high blood sugar because the insulin isn't working ( the cells can't respond properly to it)

Anyway I'm trying to have a better diet again, less fat than maybe I was during the pregnancy, will try some core strengthening work too.

I had GD but returned to pre pregnancy shape and size within a few months. I don’t know if this was luck or not.
I did have very well controlled GD with diet and a 6lb 10 baby so wasn’t huge though. Also BF which I think helps shift weight.

Sorry, not had this and not an expert, but it might be worth reading up on Dr Jason Fung's work on how insulin affects weight loss. There are videos on YouTube, The Obesity Code and Diet Doctor website

johnworf · 26/04/2020 08:46

Yes I did. It's really hard to shift. My GD was picked up at 16 weeks which is very early by all accounts.

I developed type 2 diabetes 3 years after giving birth. When I was pregnant the endo doctor said you are more susceptible to develop type 2, which is what happened.

I haven't had my glucose test since giving birth due to covid .. everything cancelled. So it maybe I haven't got rid of the diabetes or might just be with the food combining at the end I put on too much fat, it's just weird it's only on my tummy when I'm naturally pear shaped. It seems a little better last few days ? Wishful thinking and no more treats have helped ? I am breastfeeding so eh hunger is real !

@DianaT1969 I'll take a look thanks

Hi, I've just come across your thread after looking into the same thing! Has anything changed for you? I'm 10 months pp and the excess belly fat is really getting to me now & I didn't have it before my gd pregnancy (second pregnancy, 1st one non gd). I was also diagnosed late at 32 weeks and managed to stay diet controlled. I've been trying to shift it with diet and exercise but nothing is changing Confused
