Type 1 diabetes - do you have to be under a hospital/consultant?

Just as the title says really.

I feel my experiences of being under a consultant or diabetes centre are just negative . I feel judged and nervous before every appointment and if I am having a month or so of rubbish control, I feel like I'm going into the headmistress office. I've been under 2 hospitals and it's always the same.

If I went just under my GP practice, would I still be able to have my pump?

Thanks

Not myself but my adult daughter has been diabetic for 16 years and when under the hospital the best time was when she saw a diabetic nurse specialist. The consultants relentlessly made her feel a failure and small. Now she only sees the GP except for possibly once a year.

No you don't have to be. I'm under my GP only.

With a pump you need to be under 'expert' advice. Doctors in GPs are fantastic knowledgeable people but very few knew very much about T1 diabetes and it's management. You're very often educating them.

Your consultant etc want to help you. They see many people, those that struggle with control and those that grasp it fairly easily. You can learn from them, you can use them, this helps you in the long run.

As an outsider, I'd suggest the problem is your perception of the situation and not the care you are receiving from the hospital. The feelings you have are something the GP can help you with. So for the sake of your own health I recommend you get to the root cause of why you feel the way you do. Best of luck.

I've always had a consultant. Since aged 1. Never not. Been on a pump for 17 years now.

For pump management you should be under a specialist team. Gp’s don’t always know the ins and out of the management including carbohydrate counting. Not to mention the technology has moved forward in the way of the dexcom and freestyle libre which you may be eligible for. At present, to qualify for both the ccgs prefer you to be under a specialist service
