Possibly diabetes 3yo dd

Morning, took dd who is just 3 to the gp today as a few little niggles have been bothering my instincts, and dh has a family history of diabetes.

Anyhow, her blood sugar was 5.2 after breakfast but her urine showed elevated ketones and protein. They rang the local hospital paediatric registrar who advised a retest in 7 days with a possible urgent referal for type 1 if results are similar.

She is a madly healthy little monster, just has some serious hanger issues and has always drunk a lot both of which have become more apparent as she can vocalise her needs now.

Any advice? Half of me feels like a total fraud as she is so outwardly healthy but gut instinct says double check.
If it is the onset of type 1, what happens next? Our lives are typically complicated and I want to be prepared for possible scenarios.
Thank you for reading

Type 1 diabetes generally presents with the 4 t's- tiredness, thirst (constant unquenchable thirst), going to the toilet to wee a lot more and thin (losing weight). It generally comes on quickly and so if she had these symptoms then you would need to get her seen again immediately. But that blood sugar is completely normal and so diabetes seems unlikely. Ketones are often seen in urine if you haven't eaten very much, which can include first thing in the morning. With a typical presentation of diabetes you would expect ketones and glucose.

It doesnt sound like your dd has diabetes with what you've described here, but obviously follow the gps advice and see them again next week, and if you had concerns speak to them sooner.

If there was a new diagnosis of diabetes you would be admitted to hospital and commenced on insulin. Depending on how unwell a child is when they're diagnosed would depend on how they were initially managed. I wouldn't worry about preparing for possible scenarios of how things would be after that as you will have lots of support and every child copes differently. Life would change but children with diabetes can lead completely normal lives and be successful.

Fingers crossed she remains well op!

We had the text book symptoms with DS.
Grumpy
Massive sudden weightloss
Constant unquenchable thirst
Frequent peeing

Turning into
Fruity breathe
Vomiting
Blury vision
Losing consciousness

I would suggest trying to have a Hba1c test. While a finger poke will give an immediate snapshot of glucose, a hba1c will show the average levels of the previous few months.

I'm hoping it will just be a glitch but if not they are planning on sending her for the Hba1c next week.

Thanks for the advice. Mum brain says I'm over thinking but my gut says best to check.

Was she diagnosed.
I am realising that my 7 yo has symptoms

My son was ill for a couple of weeks but it coincided with a spat with his friendship group after they moved into high school so I wrote a lot of it off.

He was thirsty all the time, started bed wetting again, was so tired he would get up for school and fall asleep before he could get ready. He had lost weight but had grown so looked like he had lost his puppy fat.

The day he was admitted to hospital he was struggling to breathe.

No family history of diabetes at all so came as such a shock.

@squaresandsquares phone your GP and ask them to finger poke. They should take it very seriously, if it's nothing it'll put your mind to rest.

I spoke to GP they say her headaches a psychological. I have to keep a diary for a month.
I might call another GP tomorrow
