Would it be completely thoughtless to get chocolates for someone with diabetes?

Buying a Christmas present for someone I don't know very well and was planning on getting bath bomb, little box of nice chocolates and some other sort of little pampery thing.

However, I'd forgotten she is diabetic.
I know absolutely nothing about diabetes so I'm now not sure if getting her any sort of food stuff is a good idea?

I think she has type 1 if that makes a difference

There are diabetic chocolates available. My local supermarket has a stand for "Free From" foods and I've seen diabetic chocolates on it. I don't know if they are nice, but you could stick to your original present plan with them.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 18/12/2019 00:38

Don't get diabetic chocolate, whatever you do. It's vile!

Go for a bar of Godiva 90% cocoa chocolate. It's relatively low in sugar/carbs whilst still being creamy and delicious. I'm T1 diabetic and would be very happy with a bar of that.

madcatladyforever · 18/12/2019 00:39

No don't buy food for a diabetic that would be completely thoughtless and don't buy diabetic chocolates either. They taste disgusting and act as a laxative which is bad for their diabetic control. Just stick to the pampering.

Tartyflette · 18/12/2019 00:42

A type 2 diabetic can have the very occasional chocolate, after a meal for example, without it affecting their blood sugar levels too much,
I do and their diet is otherwise generally healthy.
Good quality plain chocolate has less sugar than milk. Sad.
Diabetic chocolates give me the shits....

Cohle · 18/12/2019 00:42

My partner likes having nice treats on hand for when he's going hypo and has to eat something sweet anyway. He wouldn't be in the slightest offended. He does think diabetic chocolates are vile and vaguely patronising though.

Tartyflette · 18/12/2019 00:43

And I mean just one chocolate, from a box, not a whole bar!

StealthPussy · 18/12/2019 00:47

Type 1 is very different from type 2. I know several type 1s and yes they can eat sugary foods in moderation and have to eat them at certain times. With type 1 you are constantly monitoring your levels and balancing with insulin, exercise and sugar to keep within a safe range to avoid going hypo or hyper.
Type 2 should be avoiding sugar wherever possible.
Get the normal or dark chocolate.

MintChocAddict · 18/12/2019 00:53

Stay away from the diabetic chocolate unless she's constipated and needs a hand Wink

Doea she carb count food? If so buy her some normal chocolate. Lots of type 1s have a good grasp of carb counting, and if so will be able to match the carbs in the chocolate to her insulin requirements.
Just because you're Type 1 doesn't mean you can't have a treat like anyone else.

It's a rubbish enough condition without having to eat shit (excuse the pun Wink chocolate too)

Diabetes uk advised to avoid all products labelled as ‘diabetic’ as the benefit isn’t any greater. It’s carbohydrates that the body converts into glucose so buying a box of chocolates is fine.
It’s about everything in moderation so as long as they aren’t likely to eat it all or half a box at once.

So sorry for my terrible advice! At least I've learned not to gift Diabetic chocolate to anyone. Grin
Maybe one of those Aloe Vera foot masks would be nice? Someone gave me some last year and after a night in heels I thought it was a wonderful present.,🐾

Chestnut23 · 18/12/2019 22:57

I am type 1 and eat chocolate most days! (In good shape and health and my condition is well managed.) I think if they like chocolate then go for it. One thing I would say is that the high sugar content in cheaper chocolates is not good and it tastes too sweet, high cocoa content chocolate is best. 70% tastes nice without being too bitter to me, 90% is not so enjoyable.

howells · 18/12/2019 23:02

My dh eats chocolate most days too. Like Chestnut, we stick to chocolate with a high cocoa content and lower sugar content (usually dark chocolate) on the whole.

RockingAroundTheXMasTree · 18/12/2019 23:07

Like @DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel said!

chocolatcroissant · 19/12/2019 18:38

Loads of really helpful advice! Thank you all so much.

I really should know more about diabetes than I do given how common it is Blush

I was going to a little box of more expensive chocolates anyway so I think I'll stick with that plan.

I'm t1 and eat chocolate, just need to count the carbs and dose the insulin. Diabetic chocs are disgusting 😱

NorthernNic · 24/12/2019 10:22

My T1 DS eats chocolate so selection boxes are gratefully received by him 😀.
He counts the carb content and has it after a meal as a treat or will have it before exercise.
