My 7 year old has been type 1 for a year and a half. At the time of diagnosis a few people in his class said he got it because he ate too much sugar. He knows this is not true (I think) but is a sensitive child and obviously doesn't like it. At the time I asked the teacher to play the video to the class explaining type 1 and how it just happens (the one with the little girl in bed talking to the ball thing). That seemed to do the trick until this week when he got upset and didnt want to go to school because a younger child said u are diabetic because you are too much sugar and he didnt feel able to speak up and say no I didnt. Is they any tips for how I can help solve this form him. I want to wear a "its autoimmune sign" but obviously that's not practical. I dont believe the children are being deliberately mean but want them corrected so they understand. He would rather I didnt talk to the school about it.

Honestly I think it's probably better to teach him to think to himself "there's no cure for stupid either." It's a horrible thing about type one diabetes that little kids get bullied because of the stigma, but one of the skills they need to learn is to become resilient about stupid remarks. A quick smile and "that's not how it works" is probably the best level of engagement.

That said, it's World Diabetes Day coming up on 14 November. Perhaps you could mention to whoever it is that you speak to about his care and see if someone could do a presentation at an assembly on that day?

Thanks. I will try that. He just takes so much to hurt. Wish it could just go in one ear and out the other but it doesn't with him. I think he would feel overwhelmed with a assembly talking about it. But can see it would help. Thanks for your reply.
