Does Metformin mess with your hormones/periods?

Hi.
I started taking Metformin 4 weeks ago (to try to stabilise my incredibly high sugar levels), a few days after the end of my last period. I am now 3 days late for my next period. It is extremely unlikely for me to be pregnant, although not technically impossible I suppose. I will do a test in a few days if no period arrives, obviously.

Now in my younger days it was perfectly normal for me to have late periods, even weeks/months late, as I have pcos, but they've been pretty regular for the past 7 years.

So has anybody else found that starting Metformin has delayed/messed up their periods? Or do I need to start looking for a different reason? I could also blame stress, but I'm not feeling massively stressed at the moment.

It’s more likely to be your high glucose levels that are having an effect on your cycle. Metformin can actually help your periods become regular and is often prescribed for women with PCOS who are trying to conceive BUT as you’re already living with diabetes, you probably know that YMWV (your mileage will vary) on just about everything to do with this condition. How long have you been on the metformin?

Sorry, just seen 4 weeks. Give it a few months to settle in. How’s your digestion?

Diabetes / prediabetes can impact ovulation. It’s possible you had anuovulatory cycles before and Metformin has helped you ovulate.

I was told that it would be extremely difficult for me to get pregnant due to a number of medical conditions. Was put on Metformin to help PCOS symptoms and got pregnant! So it's definitely possible.

Thanks for all the replies.

HarissaPaste my digestive system has settled, after horrendous issues for the first week or two.

Just to clarify, I'm not TTC at all!! I have 2 dds, one of them is now an adult, and I have no desire for any more (although I do love to cuddle a baby then hand them back). It wouldn't be the end of the world if I was to fall pregnant, but it wouldn't be ideal circumstances.

I'm really hoping the absence of period is down to the Metformin, NOT a baby. Although the digestive issues in the first couple of weeks could have caused issues I suppose.

I totally understand! I was not trying to conceive either - was happy with the children I had but we embraced the surprise and wouldn't change anything now.
Hopefully there is a different explanation for you though Smile

Just in case anyone was wondering, my period did turn up. 8 days late! I'm very glad it arrived, no matter how late.

When I was first started on metformin my periods were messed up for a while before regulating, with me I bled for weeks before skipping for a couple of months. I don't know if it was the metformin or the high sugars I had been living with before.

Good news @MsAwesomeDragon

MsAwesomeDragon · 27/08/2019 09:24

Yes. It was very good news. I know logically that it was incredibly unlikely that I could have been pregnant (for various reasons) but I've still rarely been so pleased to see a period.
