Should I take DS to GP?

LouiseEH · 25/04/2019 16:08

DS is 4 and has always drank and gone to the toilet a lot. For the last couple of days his breath has smelt like nail varnish remover, I googled this and diabetes came up. Is this enough to be concerned about and to see the GP for or will they just dismiss me?

Should also say that he has been feeling nauseous for the last few days and has been sick tuesday night and again today

IWantMyHatBack · 25/04/2019 16:10

Definitely. Classic symptoms

NotSoThinLizzy · 25/04/2019 16:10

Theyll want to check him over. Get him checked quick as you can ideally. Hope all turns out well though. They may do a finger prick test so be prepared for that.

LouiseEH · 25/04/2019 16:16

Thanks for the quick replies, I’ll book a GP appointment

OP posts:
NotSoThinLizzy · 25/04/2019 16:39

See if you can get a quick one as it's not really something that can wait around.

Justanothernamechange2 · 25/04/2019 16:42

The acetoney breath is usually a sign of ketones so a doctors appointment is pretty urgent now!! Im type1 diabetic myself and my diagnosis was pretty bad because i left it so long and got really poorly with ketones

LouiseEH · 25/04/2019 16:43

How soon should I book one? I won’t be able to get one until tomorrow. Unless I phone NHS direct?

Justanothernamechange2 · 25/04/2019 16:49

The breath is a real concern that i would consider calling for. Ketones are essentially your blood becoming acidic. It might not be diabetes/ketones but its really not something that should wait until next week. if it is diabetes your son could go downhill quite quickly. I really dont want to scare you but sometimes harsh facts are needed. Please get him checked soon!

Gingernaut · 25/04/2019 16:50

Walk In Centre or A&E.

notapizzaeater · 25/04/2019 16:50

Can you not see the practice nurse as an emergency ? If it is then time is really of the essence, tell reception what your concern is

RueDeWakening · 25/04/2019 17:00

Go to a walk in centre or A&E today, if you can't get an emergency appt at the GP.

Ketones kills. Being sick can be a sign that your body is trying to rid itself of excess sugar by any means possible. If (and I'm not saying it is, as you say he's only been sick twice) this is what's happening, the next step is coma. I've had a couple of instances of DKA that have ended up with me on a drip in hospital, it's not fun.

Most common symptoms of diabetes:
increased thirst and urination.
hunger.
weight loss.
fatigue.
irritability.
fruity smell on the breath (mine tends to smell like pear drops).
blurred vision

NotSoThinLizzy · 25/04/2019 17:02

Call your normal GPS and see if they can fit you in any the end of the day. If we try nhs24 before 6 we get told to go to them as they have a duty to see you. Depends who you think will be quicker really

LouiseEH · 25/04/2019 17:21

Ok so.. I phoned NHS direct and they told me to get an appointment with my GP. All but one GP is closed today for training so there is nothing available. I’m going to book an appointment first thing tomorrow morning to get him checked and keep an eye on him until then to see if his symptoms get worse or not.

I genuinely don’t know if I should be worried or not, if I didn’t post on here then I would have waited until tomorrow to book and appointment but these replies have really scared me and I feel like I’m putting my son in danger or something. 😫

I'm a type 1 too. I can't believe NHS direct said that!

I'd go to A&E. Even if I get ketones it can go downhill quick. I've been admitted before and that's having diagnosis and treatment etc
Flowers it will be fine and I'm sure there are other things it could be. But it really isn't wise to leave it. If he has ketones, his blood sugar has potentially been very high for a while.

Justanothernamechange2 · 26/04/2019 06:32

Please let us know how you get on today x

Boohootoyootoo · 26/04/2019 06:47

Louise the likelihood is that he has a bit of a tummy bug and smelly breath.

It's good you are getting him checked out but it's far more likely that he is totally fine. Please don't take a diagnosis from Mumsnet and let your brain run away with it.

Am sure it will be fine x

Footle · 26/04/2019 17:08

And please don't take possibly false reassurance from
Mumsnet either. Safe or sorry?

Boohootoyootoo · 26/04/2019 23:29

FFS Footle - I was trying to give some reassurance whilst saying getting it checked out was a good idea.

Nobody can diagnose diabetes from a strange breath smell and a couple of upchucks. Only a doctor can, hence why it is a good idea to get it checked out without getting too worked up about it at the same time...

WTFisThat · 30/04/2019 22:24

What's the outcome op?

Aveeno2017 · 01/05/2019 06:32

Boohootoyootoo I can see why so many people are saying go to A&E my daughter nearly died from undiagnosed diabetes because Ithe doctor told me I needed to get a blood test done and didn't seem very concerned. I would rather OP came back and said everything was ok than come back and say her child was seriously ill or had been lost.

Boohootoyootoo · 01/05/2019 06:44

Yes, which is why I said it was a good idea to get him checked out.

The likelihood however is that he is fine. And in the meantime, whilst waiting for the doctor and tests, it is better for the mum not to get totally worked up about it which will help no one.

On these posts you're not going to get the people who thought their child had diabetes but didn't. You're going to get the people who sadly did find out they had diabetes. But overall - they will be in the minority of those people who suspected it.

Which is why generally, asking for medical advice on the internet is NOT a good idea and going to see a doctor IS.

No one wants to be either falsely diagnose causing undue stress and anxiety or told nothing is wrong and then missing something.

See a GP.

Aveeno2017 · 01/05/2019 11:20

Of course your proberbly right! But I'm speaking from experiance! If a mum wrote on here that she suspected that her child may have symptoms of meningitis would you tell them to go to the doctors or to A&E they symptoms the OP do sound like my daughter's symptoms! I just would not waste time with the doctors, just because t1 diabetes isn't as common doesn't make it any less serious.

WeMustGetOffTheMountain · 24/06/2019 15:24

Those are classic symptoms, I’d definitely get him looked at. Hope all is ok.

whatsleep · 02/09/2019 20:31

Hope you’ve had him checked over and all is well OP
