SSRIs elevate blood sugar levels - will they ever go down again?

I posted this on Mental Health, but this seems to be the right place for my thread actually.

I've been on paroxetine, one type of SSRI-drug, for a couple of years. I've noticed my blood sugar levels go up (both fasting blood sugar and HbA1c). I haven't gained weight when on paroxetine, but still something is happening with my insulin/glucose balance.

The question is, is it reversible? Do SSRI's destroy pancreatic cells, or is it mainly a "temporary" problem of insulin sensitivity? Will the blood sugar levels go back to normal once I discontinue paroxetine?

Are you type 1 or type 2 op? If type 1 you'll need to redress your long acting insulin dose to cope with the higher sugars. If type 2 then you'll probably need to see the GP as it'll be a medication issue that needs sorting before you have any I'll effects from high sugars. Hope that helps - I've been type 1 many many years and both my parents are type 2 so I've a fair rounding in the condition from a patient point of view

Thank you Shadow93.

I'm actually on neither of them - just that my normally good sugar levels have gone up closer and closer a prediabetic state. (HbA1c 35 (5,4%), used to be 29 - 4,8%) This might sound like overreacting but I've seen it go up gradually month after month and I'm slightly worried.

I would definitely be down the GP then, it's easier to stave off type 2 than treat it. If you can then get your sugars under control so you can avoid a diabetes diagnosis! Good luck!
