Not diabetic but fasting blood glucose is 7

I'm not diabetic but have bought a glucose monitor as DH is pre-diabetic. I've tested my blood sugar this morning before breakfast and got 7 which seems high considering I've not eaten for at least 12 hours.

Is this something to be concerned about?

It's a level that indicates diabetes I'm afraid, although only just. Why don't you check again over a few days (and possibly with a different meter if you have one available) and if it is consistently elevated, see your GP.

I know this isn't a very recent post but this is the same as me and I was told I was prediabetic. I've been given no advice or information other than that and I'm quite scared.

@Elephantbiscuit Go to the diabetes.co.uk forums and there is always someone to answer your questions. I've learned loads more there than from my diabetes nurse.

@gingerkittykat Thank you. I've been reading through the forum as I was considering the 800 diet but I do have a few other health issues (epilepsy being the main one) and a lot of food intolerances so I'm not sure if its safe. Post meal my bloods were 8.00 which google (I know you shouldn't google to much!) said puts me in type 2. Its all very confusing.

The first reading of the morning can be high because the liver does a glycogen dump .take a reading before you eat then one an hour later then one 2 hrs later ( people differ on the time it takes them to process insulin )

Get advice, obviously, but I believe a low carb diet is sometimes used to control epilepsy, as well as being recommended for diabetes.

Go and see your gp. They will send you for a fasting blood test and take it from there.

Defo see your doctor but be aware not all doctors are very well trained in diabetic treatment - specialist nurses can have much more up to date training. You should read a couple of books to give you a grounding so you can make your own decisions about what to do next. This will also arm you with the information you need to challenge your Doctor or Nurse.
