Diabetes symptoms?!

Hiya.

Cutting a long story short. For a few weeks now I’ve been a feeling a bit “off”.

Lightheaded a lot. Sometimes this is in the morning when I wake up, sometimes it’s if I haven’t eaten for a while and other times it’s around half hour to an hour after food. I actually visually shake and tremble and I fainted at home the other day. Very tired all the time even in the morning when I get up. Thirsty all the time ( usually 4 + bottles of water a day and they hold just under a litre) and how having to wake in the night to pee. Which probably doesn’t help with the tiredness to be honest.

I’m thinking I should go to GP and ask for them to check for diabetes.

Does that sound right based on my symptoms? I did initially think it’s my anaemia playing up though.

Thanks Smile

Could be all sorts of things, but just before I was diagnosed with Type 1 (nearly 25 years ago now) the main symptoms I had were tiredness like I'd never had before, a massive thirst, and itchy skin. Oh, and thrush. Have you lost weight without trying to, as that's another symptom?

Whatever it is, it would be a good idea to go to your GP to get tested, as if it is undiagnosed diabetes, you need medical attention as a matter of urgency. Actually, I think pharmacists can do a simple finger-prick blood test as well. Please don't waste any time making an appointment, though.

Thank you for replying.

I’ve had really itchy skin to the point I’ve broken it and it’s bled but only on one leg.

I’ll look into a pharmacist doing a finger prick test if I can’t get a doctor appointment (8 week wait here for just a nurse appointment!!)

Excessively thirsty

eggofmantumbi · 04/02/2019 20:35

If it's t1 diabetes and you suspect that, they'll see you urgently and you'll most likely have a hospital stay.

I was diagnosed 9 months ago and my symptoms were
Needed to pee
unquenchable thirst
Deteriorating eyesight
Smelly breath
Quick heart rate
Quick weight loss

I'd call the gp and explain this was your concern....

streakofmalevolence · 04/02/2019 20:37

If you let your drs receptionist know that you are concerned about diabetes type 1 I'm sure you will get an appt sooner than 8 weeks

DumbleDork · 04/02/2019 21:41

egg now you say it I’ve noticed my eyes are blurry and I’ve only had my new glasses 10 months.

Booking a doctors appointment tomorrow morning first thing

@dumbledork let us know how you get on.
Really hope it's not, but if it is, it's okay x

abbey44 · 04/02/2019 22:13

That's a good idea - I hope it's not, but if it is, the sooner you find out the better. Good luck x

eggofmantumbi · 05/02/2019 11:32

Did you get an appointment @dumbledork?

Murinae · 05/02/2019 11:38

You can buy a glucose monitor with about 10 sticks from any chemist and do a quick check yourself. Think they were about £10 last time I bought one. You can also buy urine sticks from Amazon. But getting a doctors appointment quickly would be better!

DumbleDork · 05/02/2019 20:34

I did yes. They’ve taken some blood to test as I had sugar in my urine. He didn’t say much about what happens next other than call in a few days for my test results.

Really nervous now to be honest Confused

If it's any consolation if they suspected t1, they'd have got you straight to hospital I'd have thought, that's certainly what happened to me....

SandysMam · 05/02/2019 20:54

Ask for a kidney screen too if they haven’t done one. Those symptoms can also be kidney failure. Chronic anaemia can also be linked to kidney problems. Not all doctors screen routinely so make sure you request that. Hope you get to the bottom of it all Flowers

If you are type 2 a keto way of eating will bring your blood sugars down, depending on your numbers, with or without medication. I was diagnosed pre diabetic but symptoms were tiredness, blurred vision, brain fog. I was shocked and worried but keto has given me normal blood sugars and I feel much better having lost 11 kgs very easily following this way of eating.
