Need advice about my diabetes concern for my daughter

I’m making an a appointment for daughter tomorrow with the doctors. She’ll be 2 in November and I’m becoming so concerned that she might have diabetes. She has a few symptoms, she drinks loads and I mean an excessive amount and she Wees incredibly a lot, to the point she’s having 3 bottles of drink a night and having her nappy changed 3 times a night but still wetting through it. I thought it was normal the amount she drinks and weed because she’s been doing it for about 5 months but I keep getting people telling me wow she does drink and wee a lot, I just can’t tell if it’s normal or not. She is also hungry a lot and snacks a lot but she doesn’t actually eat a lot. Her poo is always solid even though she drinks so much. She gets tired a lot but she won’t give in because she feels like she’s going to miss out on something. I was just wondering if anyone else has been through something similar and if it turned out not to be diabetes. As they say it usually comes on quickly and she’s been going through this for about 5 months but it is getting worse. Any advice would be great thank you! Erica xo

Hi
My 8 year old was recently diagnosed. She deteriorated over the course of 2 weeks - first bed wetting, then the thirst came on and I finally looked at her and realised she was like a walking skeleton. I kick myself I didn’t take her to the gp sooner, she ended up in hospital for several days. Within days of starting treatment she was like a different girl. Like you, I knew she had the signs of diabetes (thirst, toilet changes, tiredness, thin - the four t’s) but I kept telling myself the symptoms would settle. Your little one is much younger and probably can’t articulate how she is feeling but diabetes is not something to be messed with and I’d insist on a appointment straight away with the gp. They diagnosed my little girl within minutes of arriving in a and e and it’s very simple to test for. I don’t mean to scare you and I know you asked for stories where it didn’t turn out to be diabetes but I wish someone had prompted me to seek advice earlier as I just didn’t see the weight loss or the urgency of the situation until my little one was really poorly. I wish you all the best if it is diabetes but really hoping it isn’t for your girl.

@Harry011
What was the update with your little girl? Is she ok?

Hi Harry
We are getting there. It’s been two months now since her diagnosis, she is back at school and we are managing but it is a relentless condition and I’m still in the early stages with coming to terms with it. How is your little one? Did you take her to a gp? I really hope it was something less invasive than diabetes. I didn’t have a clue prior to my daughter’s diagnosis what diabetes involved. X

@Lottie7777
It's a lot to take in. My DD is 12 and we're still learning 6 years later. But we don't let it stop her doing anything. Important for them to meet other T1 children when you get the chance. It makes a big difference to them x

Hi @lottie7777 - my DD, then 8, was diagnosed in June this year. Sounds like we had a very similar experience to you. As well as the four Ts, her behaviour before diagnosis was terrible - I thought it might have been early hormones, or some kind of stress, or pretty much any scenario I could come up with. So bad, in fact, that I was relieved that there was something concrete causing it all. It is relentless, though. She was most worried about her birthday party (just a couple of weeks post-diagnosis), and thought she would have to eat carrots and hummus for ever. Hope things are improving for you.
