Prediabetic and scared

I decided to loose some weight and started a keto way of eating. Two months in I was not feeling well, palpitations, insomnia, dizzy and faint. I went to my gp and was sent for a fasted blood glucose test. The result was 6.1, which I was told is prediabetic. I now need a glucose tolerance test but cant have it for another week. I still feel shocking, quite foggy headed and faint. I researched prediabetes and keto was recommended, is there anyone else who has experience of prediabetes and keto and can share their experience? I dont know anyone else affected by diabetes and I am scared.

So you got a high BG score even after doing keto for 2 months? That is unusual for T2 as lots of people start keto to improve their BG (like me). Perhaps yours before was higher. Just keep up with your appointments and do some research.

What were you eating on keto? There are some misconceptions out there and bad information. I can point you towards some websites or podcasts with good information.

I am happy to report i have sorted my diet, found Dr Ken Berry on youtube and now keep my levels under control. I joined lots of face book groups and I have started the low carb bootcamp here on mumsnet to get rid of any excess kgs. Any tips or hints appreciated.

Oh awesome! I just read Michael Moseley's book which was really helpful and now working to get my BG down too

Tatiannatomasina · 21/10/2018 07:48

Michael Moseley is excellent. I now know carbs are the enemy and I stick to 20g a day and my blood glucose is stable and in normal range. I am slowly losing weight, 9kgs so far and I feel better for it. I am so glad I didnt listen to the diabetic nurse who tried to tell me 150g of carbs a day would be good for me!!! I am happy to say I am fat fuelled and will never go back to my old ways. If anyone else reads this who was in my position please research a keto way of eating, it can literally save your life.

I am waking up every morning in a cold sweat I feel dizzy, faint, and I am also experiencing palpitations, my weight is creeping up for no particular reason. I went to the chemist and asked for the free diabetes check and my levels were normal.
I have a feeling I might have type 2. I need to reduce my sugar and carbs but I think I am in shock.

Tatiannatomasina · 22/10/2018 10:17

@Alwayscheerful, please dont panic, you probably need to test your average blood glucose over the last 3 months to see where you are at. I would make a drs appointment and tell them your symptoms and ask for it to be checked. I can pass a fasting blood sugar test no problem even now, but the 3 month test or glucose tolerance test will diagnose you.
If its diabetes there is a world of help and advice out there. I have joined a facebook group called Stay Strong! ( A Pre diabetes and diabetes support group) they have some good info on there in their pinned posts, I think they are based in America but i like their approach. Please post back and let me know how you get on. I was horrendously dizzy with palpitations when I was trying to sort out my blood sugar levels.

Tatianna thank you I will arrange a arrange an HbA1c test, I have joined the Facebook page. 💐

Jaxhog · 22/10/2018 16:11

Don't panic! I've been T2 for over 10 years and have my numbers sorted. 6.2 isn't all that bad (I was 5.2 this morning - but I'm taking pills). Get yourself an HbA1c test though to see just how pre-D you are.

t1mum3 · 02/11/2018 15:17

It is possible for a ketogenic diet to raise fasting blood glucose as dietary fat can contribute to insulin resistance. It's complicated. Anyway, take a OGTT and get an HBA1C done and take it from there with your GP.
