DH has surgery Wednesday (was about 8hrs). He has a very serious RTC on his motorbike Tuesday and was airlifted to hospital. His blood sugars have been sky high since admission, despite having eaten very little at all. I believe the diabetic nurse is going to see him today, is there anything we should be asking?

For info he is type 2, was diagnosed 8 weeks ago with. Hba1c of 105. Its all new and now with this I am totally lost. Also any ideas on snacks that will keep without cooling, that will be diabetic suitable, need to get him to eat. He didn't like popcorn as that's one of the things I saw online.

Thanks

Is he definitely t2? I know that’s what he’s been told but some people are told that and are actually t1. That is a high a1c for a t2 and I would expect if not eating much his sugars to not be so bad if t2. That said, stress can push sugars higher so it could be that.
Just wondering if they may start him on insulin. Does he have any t2 risk factors? My dad was told he was t2, aged 32. He wasn’t, he is most definitely t1.

They have queried the same waiting, the diabetes nurse came to see him but he was down getting plaster and I wasn't there. She not back until Tuesday but thety do have access to one in an emergency. His sugar level was 19 today but had dropped to 13 tonight. He hasn't eaten much at all. He had an insulin pump thing Tuesday but now is back in his normal tablets. He is having a blood transfusion tonight for low haemoglobin, at the moment it's the other issues rather than his leg causing concern!

It sounds like he could be LADA - late adult onset t1 diabetes.
He can have antibody testing if they aren’t sure, although that isn’t always conclusive.
If he has no risk factors for t2 - family history, overweight, high carb eater - I’d be leaning more towards it being t1 although not everyone has those risk factors to be t2.

His mum is T2 so there is a family history. Will try to get a conversation with the diabetes nurse Tuesday
