Stopped taking metformin

I was diagnosed with t2 in December, and was in denial for the first month or two. Doc prescribed metformin 1 a day, but I was also testing my levels after eating (not advised by doc)and tried really hard to stick to diabetes diet (but levels were always really high) Im awfully forgetful and often had days where i didnt take my pill! Late March I finally found a meal (baked pot, tuna and salad) that didn't send my levels through the roof, as other meals had, and just eat that everyday. I saw the DN in June who told me I'd lost over a stone and my hba1c had come down too!

My phone posted too quickly! I've pretty much stopped taking my metformin, as I don't think I need to take it as my levels came down without them (pretty much) my friend said I should keep taking them...what do you think??

What was you Hba1c level? If it was borderline you may be ok but I would certainly check it out with your doctor.

ajandjj my first level was 53, then June's was 45. I didn't tell the dn cos I didn't want to get shouted at Grin

45 is not diabetic - my GP told me that 49 is the diabetic level. Mine is currently 43, largely brought down by diet, but I am going to start on an exercise routine (tomorrow!!!) because that can apparently have a very positive impact on your Hba1c level. But I am doing this with my GP's knowledge - I found going to talk to him about the steps I was taking was helpful (I was at 49 at that point), and he has been very supportive of me trying to control this. I have done lots of reading about diabetes and how to help, so could talk to him with confidence. The nurse was useless!

Both the dn and diabetic doctor are useless! When I saw the dn she said the doc was satisfied with my hba1c, but if not diabetic why not tell me I don't need metformin anymore?

Maybe they didn't realise you hadn't been taking it regularly, and perhaps thought that was why it had come down. You need to have a proper chat. Smile
