What did you change in diet/lifestyle after your gestational diabetes pregnancy?

I'm reposting here aftee initially posting in pregnancy section.

Just hoping to get ideas from other mothers who had GD re keeping blood sugars in the normal range at least for the next few years. For example, have you gone low carb high fat or made any other lifestyle changes?

I had GD in both my pregnancies, and needed metformin second time round. I'm 42 with two dc (3 years and 3 months) so was an 'older mother' for both pregnancies. Both times, my six week post partum glucose tolerance test results were normal (4.5 fasting & 5.5 2hrs post glucose drink last time round) but I know I'm at high risk of developing type 2 over the next few years.

All the diabetes clinic said was to get tested every year and 'be healthy' Confused My bmi is in normal range - 21.

TIA

Lower carb diet (not high fat though) and plenty of exercise. There's no miracle cure, but addressing any insulin resistance is probably going to help most people who have had GD. It's a really good idea to get checked every year, especially if you ever consider another pregnancy.

Same boat here . I have been scared to get the pp glucose done (ugh) but having a1c checked this week - 4 months pp. I have tried to stick to the following from the GD regime (never needed meds):

  • eggs and leafy greens for breakfast with small amount of carb only
  • mid morning and mid afternoon snack with protein and fruit; otherwise no grazing
  • tons of water
  • basically never having carbs on their own. To the point of having a spoonful of peanut butter if there is a birthday cake or something , and having a smaller amount .

I have been ramping up exercise - will be bike commuting again when back. Working w a trainer to establish good weight bearing exercise 3 times a week which I have never been good at sticking to before.

All in all, trying to make these into permanent positive changes, not a diet or restriction kick. Trying to slow down and listen to the body. All easier said than done but worth it!
