Increased blood sugar when ill?

I've been under the weather for most of December. My blood sugar has been higher than normal - I did put this down to eating Christmas food but I've been giving myself the right about of insulin so it can't be just this.

I'm generally very insulin resistant but can manage to keep it fairly under control, but the last couple of weeks I've not been able to get it down to single figures.

The last couple of days my blood sugar has been in the 20s. This is obviously worrying.

I thought it might be down to blood glucose meter, but it's consistent over a couple. I'm wondering if I have a dodgy batch of insulin, or if I can put it down to having a virus

Any other ideas? I will contact my diabetes team after the holidays (or A&E if it gets worse) but I'm worrying about it in the meantime.

OH ( diabetic for over 30 years) always has higher blood sugars than normal if he has an infection or is under the weather, so it could be that yours are just being caused by a virus, although a month seems a long time for them to have been running consistently high.
OH injects 4 times a day and is a confident insulin adjuster so in your shoes he would have tried increasing the number of units he has in the hope that this would bring levels down to a more acceptable level. I’m not clear whether you have adjusted your dose at all, but if not would it be a possibility?. The difficulty in adjusting your dose upwards is giving yourself too much and running the risk of having a hypo, which of course you don’t want to happen, but with blood sugars in the 20s you’ve got a fair way to go before you get to that point.
I know I’m not really being of any help but if it’s any consolation you do have my sympathy. OH diabetes has been part of our life for so long that when things are stable it’s not something I or anyone else for that matter make any allowances for. For the most part he just gets on with it, as he has no choice really, but it definitely affects him on a daily basis with all the injections, blood testing etc and like you he worries when readings aren’t at the levels they should be. With blood sugars in the 20s you can’t be feeling brilliant at the moment so I hope things improve for you soon.

Thanks - yes I've been adjusting but it's very very slow to respond (probably an insulin resistance thing).

It's quite scary when you just can't get your numbers down Sad

My friend is type 1 , she recently went through a phase of really high readings despite normal eating , no virus etc. She has insulin pump and still wasn't controlled well.
Turned out to be very low Vit D levels that caused it...who knew ????

That's really interesting re vit D - I was prescribed some last year as I had low levels. Time to start taking them regularly again just in case.

I would go to doctors ASAP if levels aren't lower by now.
