So...crap...106 mmol. I have diabetes don't I?

Routine blood tests at the drs last week and just looked at my results online. HbA1c level was 106 mmol. Haven't had my follow up with the GP yet so I'm just guessing but that's pretty clear isn't it? I'm overweight and my dad has diabetes if that makes a difference.

Yup.

Anything over 40 is scary.

Have you lost weight recently, or does the doctor think it might be Type 2?

orangeglove · 12/06/2017 20:33

106 mmol? If that was correct you'd be dead. For reference, over 7 mmol may indicate diabetes.

It is likely to be 106 mg/dl that you are seeing, and while that is slightly high, it is not necessarily an indicator of diabetes. It may be pre diabetes and if it is, you can take steps to prevent it from becoming diabetes.

Don't worry or interpret anything until you've spoken to your doctor.

ShelaghTurner · 12/06/2017 20:34

I don't know anything yet. Not seeing her for a couple of weeks. And no weight loss. I'm assuming type 2 yes (am 45)

Or is it 10.6?

Have you looked at the blood sugar diet? Might be worth discussing it with your GP.

ShelaghTurner · 12/06/2017 20:36

This was the test result...

Yes you have. That's the blood test that is a 6-12 week average number and its high. So sorry OP, I got type 1 as an adult and am now on insulin but ironically am healthier and have never felt better! Have you got a follow up Drs appointment?

Gingernaut · 12/06/2017 20:43

106mmol/mol.

Yup. The next measurement would be the current plasma glucose or alternatively, the GTT, where you fast, drink a specific amount of a sugary drink and, after a period of time measure blood glucose again.

Gingernaut · 12/06/2017 20:45

106 mmol/mol is equal to 11.8% in 'old money'.

orangeglove · 12/06/2017 20:47

I see. mmol is not the same as mmol/mol

It is high. Still, wait and see your doctor.

ASDismynormality · 12/06/2017 20:50

That's high.

I am pre-diabetic and at a level of 42 felt pretty unwell, you must feel awful.

I would really suggest you look at Michael Mosley blood sugar diet book.

ShelaghTurner · 12/06/2017 20:50

Bollocks. I knew, I suppose so it's not really a surprise. Would have been more of a surprise if I hadn't. Yes will wait and see dr before I panic but will do lots of reading in the meantime.

Thanks all. Smile

I don't feel too bad, just very very tired, like napping all the time and waking up shattered, which was what prompted me to get checked out.

OP posts:
ShelaghTurner · 12/06/2017 20:55

I'll have a look at the book, thanks.

106mmol/mol is diagnostic for diabetes. Anything over 42 is at risk of diabetes. Over 48 is diabetes. Currently you need 2 Hba1c levels with a gap in between to have a full diagnosis

JaneEyre70 · 12/06/2017 21:00

I had a HbA1c of 68 at a routine blood test 2 years ago. Doctor told it was high, to reduce my sugar intake and lose some weight. I was terrified as my dad has type 2 diabetes, it runs in the family. I lost 3 stone, and cut all sugar out of my diet. My next reading was 38. So they told me to carry on, but over 18 months it crept back up and up and the last one I had last month was 61. So I'm now officially diabetic, and am on Metformin to stimulate my pancreas into making more insulin. It's what it is, tbh....if you have a family history, it's pretty inevitable tbh but cutting out sugar and watching your carb intake is a really good start.

PotOfYoghurt · 12/06/2017 23:25

The blood sugar diet book mentioned above is great.

My dad was diagnosed Type 2 a few years ago, he probably had it for years beforehand as he was nearly blind by the time he went to a doctor.

My mum helped him research and read book after book and followed Michael Moseley's diet plan and they both lost a huge amount of weight and have been the happiest and healthiest they've been in years. Being diagnosed with diabetes was the best thing that ever happened to my dad, as weird as it sounds.

His mood improved dramatically, my mother said he was like the man she married again (30 odd years later!) and he stopped needing glasses to read the paper, which he's done as long as I can remember.

Last year he went for his checkup and his doctor said he had reversed his diabetes. His levels were so good he doesn't need to be on medication anymore. He was so proud when he went to his pharmacist and only asked for cholesterol medication and not metformin, the pharmacist thought he had lost part of his prescription.

They still follow a low carb/low sugar lifestyle and are in the prime of their lives, it's not the millstone it once used to be.

Good luck with your appointment. Flowers

I was diagnosed as last year at 37 with T1. It is hard, but also manageable. I currently have an Hb1ac of 31 (was 84 diagnosis). At some point I will need insulin, but at the moment manage on diet and metformin.

Lowering carb levels and increasing healthy fats in your diet is the way to go. T2 can definitely be reversed (unlike T1). Controlling blood sugar levels is the key.

I also recommend getting a meter. It will keep you in check.

Also, I'm now the healthiest I have been for years. I feel amazing, and one of my friends has nicknamed me supermodel 🤥

ASDismynormality · 13/06/2017 07:47

I think Jane and pot show that you need to change the way you eat forever if you want to permanently reverse T2 diabetes.

Have a look also over here, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/low_carb_bootcamp/2952479-Week-4-Low-Carb-Bootcamp-Coming-to-the-end-of-our-first-month. It want I found when I was looking for a way to reverse my pre-diabetes and have stuck to the LCHF and lan since Jan now.

ShelaghTurner · 13/06/2017 11:16

Just had call from dr to bring me in for another blood test. She wouldn't be drawn, just said possibility. But she knows me well and is trying not to panic me. I'm not fooled Wink

Downloaded the blood sugar diet book so shall have a good read of that. Thanks all Flowers

Let us know how you get on @ShelaghTurner

ShelaghTurner · 29/06/2017 17:50

OK so today was D Day. Second blood test was the same and so she's put me on metformin and made me an appt with various people. She was actually very positive and kept reiterating that I was young enough to turn this round. I've lost 10lb since that first blood test result so am fully intending to reverse this. I'm just pissed off with myself that I let it get to this.
