Anyone with Type 2 not taking Metformin?

I'm recently diagnosed with Type 2 and been prescribed Metformin. Started with 1 tablet per day and was told to gradually increase to 4 per day but I've only got as far as 2 per day and my gut is so upset I can't see myself ever managing to get above this dosage.

Some days are ok but others I practically spend the day trying to stay close to the loo just in case. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if they were eventually prescribed an alternative?

I tend to forget to take mine for days at a time so when I do remember my stomach gets upset a few hours later and I need to be close to a toilet, after a few days of taking it regular things settle down again.

I should take 2 a day but only ever take the 1 but then I'm massively in denial over needing them and being diabetic at all.

You could ask gp for modified release metformin. Take it once a day and acts slowly over the day, better for stomach. . I'd go back to gp and see what they suggest.

I also take Ferrous Fumarate, Ramipril and Omeprazole so am aware these may be exacerbating the issue. I hadn't heard of the slow release so I will make an appointment ASAP, thanks for the info. At least my surgery has a specialist diabetes GP so she should know what to do.

I am in a Tier 3 bariatric programme on my way to having gastric bypass probably by the end of this year so am hopeful the need for diabetes medication will disappear along with my hypertension and other complications post surgery.

Please forgive me if this seems to be insensitive - but if you're en route to bariatric surgery, I'm assuming that you need to lose a lot of weight?

If so, and if you're a type 2 diabetic, why don't you join us on the next low carb Bootcamp, starting on May 22? It's a way of eating that's hugely beneficial for those who are pre-diabetic as well as type 2 diabetics.

Look out for the sign up thread in chat.

(And apologies if this doesn't apply)

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 07/05/2017 22:23

BIWI Yes I need to lose 10-11 stone, I have a BMI of over 50 Blush. I will keep an eye out as though technically pre-surgery I am not obliged to lose any weight, obviously the more I lose before the op, the more I will lose afterwards.

Thanks for the info I wasn't aware of the boot camp Smile

Although you're not obliged to lose any, surely it will make you feel better if you do?

The next Bootcamp starts on 22 May, but there's an ongoing chat thread with a lot of other Bootcampers, which is hugely supportive - come and join us!

I am T2 and don't take Metformin. My Diabetes is under control with diet and exercise. When I was diagnosed I was offered metformin but had heard horror stories about the side effects and decided to try to modify my diet first, as it was poor diet which had got me into the mess in the first place.

Do you know what your HbA1c was on diagnosis? And did your GP discuss his changing your diet could possibly bring your blood sugars under control without resorting to medication?

I adopted a Low Carb way of eating, which has helped me lose weight and control my diabetes. i also joined the Diabetes.co.uk website where there is loads of good advice (note this is NOT the same as the diabetes.or. UK site).

Good luck with your weightloss

Yes after a period of trying to control it with diet and exercise successfully and then recently unsuccessful I was put on metformin but complained I could t take it with eating a heavy meal which defeats the object really so have been put on sukkarto which is just a slightly more expensive version of metformin I think.

I only take it if I haven't eaten something substantial or I'll be in the bathroom.

To run away from sugary diet, doing a lot of exercise and reading this book has helped me a lot in diabetic control journey. www.amzn.to/2tPoDCR
