metformin and breastfeeding

Hello all

My gestational diabetes has developed into a severe type 2 after the delivery and I'm now on metformin 2g a day. I'm also breastfeeding. I'm wondering if there are any other mums who are/were taking it while bf and what effect did it have on your baby? My diabetic nurse says it's safe but the small amount goes into breastmilk and it can make baby very hungry. it got me extremely worried. Does it mean my baby is having his blood sugars constantly being lowered? It can't be good can it? Please someone share your experiences and opinions.

Metformin does not lower blood glucose but prevents it from going up. Not harmful for the baby as far as I know.

I am breastfeeding on metformin. No adverse effects for my 18 month old.

Metformin doesn't lower blood glucose or affect insulin production. It affects the way glucose is metabolised by the liver and the way it is absorbed in the intestine. So there's no risk of hypoglycemia with metformin, for you or baby.

That's what I was told by the doctors, too. However I had a bs of 2.9 recently, is this considered a hypo? Could it happen to a healthy person without diabetes? If not, does it mean it's metformin that caused it? I had breakfast on that day, but then went for a nap, hadn't snacked for a few hours and ran up and down the stairs few times.
