DS was diagnosed nearly 2 years ago and has been on pump for over a year so we are familiar with the day to day but this is his first trip away with school. They will be doing a lot of hiking (DS is not normally very active!). He did a practice walk last week of 9 miles and had 2 hypos (luckily during breaks so he was able to rest afterwards) despite drinking lucozade sport. He also went v.low the morning after. He has omnipod
Any tips?
I think I will need to get them to check BG more regularly during walks & put his basal down during exercise + probably eat dinner & a late supper.
His school are great and quite willing to test him at 2am if necessary. I had said not (we usually test at 10.30 & 6.30)but after the practice walk I'm now thinking perhaps they should test him in the night??
We've no real experience of him doing exercise over several hours / days as he's just not the sporty type. He complains about a 1 hour swimming lesson.
I've been reading up and realised I need to check if there is no sugar juice at the centre (or pack his own bottle)
The children have been told not to bring sweets and chocolate but from previous experience of an older child I know they mostly ignore this (one mum stuffed her son's suitcase with chocolate snacks for midnight feasts) so we have talked about that and what to do.
What else haven't I thought of?

Rushing past to post, since I'm packing for my 15 y/o's residential. First one where we haven't stayed with him ...
Spares of everything, including a spare set change kit for him /teacher to keep on them when out and about in case the set somehow comes off (it has happened to us!).
In my experience ds gets very excited and tends to plummet due to late night shenanigans. We haven't managed a sleepover for him yet as he was just hypo city, he's older now, so I think should be more sensible ?!! I have advised that he turns his basal down and teachers are checking him to make sure he is fairly steady to go into the night. I find that when he is active during the day it can affect his basal overnight (downwards) and he often needs a reduced basal. They have offered to check him in the night, but are going to wake him if his hypo/ hyper alarm sounds on his pump so that he can treat it. I've advised that he may need to rest in the morning if he has had a bad night.
I'm putting in plenty of carb snacks for him.
