Are we in the end stages of advanced dementia with Dad?

My Dad turns 85 tomorrow. He is in a care home with advanced dementia. He is doubly incontinent, has trouble standing, can hardly walk without tipping over and mostly babbles. He has really slowed down on his eating and drinking of late but still manages about 2-3 glasses of thickened meal fluid stuff each day. He’s lost 6 kilos in the last 3 months but only 1 in the last month. He sleeps about 75% of the time. My gut is telling me that he can’t go on like this for more than a couple of months, but he’s been ‘living’ like this for the last 3-5 months so much so that palliative care discharged him. Are we in the end stages? Can anyone relate? I’m struggling to understand how to keep ‘normal’ living ie: making future plans for Christmas etc, while this runs alongside.

Sending lots of understanding and comfort to you. Dementia is a right b*er - went through the same thing with my mum. Alzheimer's Society has a brilliant online forum, Talking Point, which got me through the dark times. I can thoroughly recommend it. Meanwhile, this acute pain will pass; you will grieve of course, but will remember good times and smile. I love your comment "He was the best of us" - what a lovely tribute. Xx💐💐

I’m so sorry for your loss. It goes so very deep when you lose a beloved parent. I’m certain if he were here he would give you a hug and want you to feel ok.

I'm so terribly sorry, your story is so similar to mine just 6 months ago. It is an awful thing to watch someone you love so dearly like that. Please look after yourself now.

Hello everyone. My Dad died at 3 am last night. Not sure of the day as all the days have blurred into one long tumultuous day. We had a meeting with palliative care who took it upon themselves to reduce his morphine dose. So in the midst of watching his painful laboured breathing for hours upon hours, I then had to convince the nurse to raise it. He lasted a long while. In the end he wasn’t even there: he was breathing but he had long left. My hearts a bit broken. He was the best of my family.

Hi Vcal2017
Just to reassure you that apparently laboured breathing would not have necessarily been painful for your DF. My DM took 14 days to go on end of life drugs in her Care Home but she was clearly unaware despite laboured stop start breathing.
You made the right call when your father was distressed that he needed medication.
I honestly think that dying in an NHS hospital with curtains round the bed would have been far less satisfactory.
Best wishes to you. 💐
