Early, accurate dementia diagnosis - sign the petition

Sign the petition: Make early, accurate dementia diagnosis a right.
Dementia is the UK’s leading cause of death – yet 1 in 3 people with dementia in the UK don't have a diagnosis. That’s not just a crisis. It’s wrong.

Because behind every missed diagnosis is a person. Left in the dark. Unheard. Unseen.

A diagnosis won't fix everything – but it changes everything. It brings answers, support, and the chance to take part in research for a cure.

We're calling on the government to act now – to make dementia diagnosis a right, not a waiting game.
Don't leave dementia unseen: sign the petition now.

Signed. Thank you for this. FIL obviously losing his memory, doctors said it takes 6 months of watching to diagnose - yet gave no indication of how this would be achieved.

A diagnosis will change nothing. There is no support and no cure. No amount of research will change my 94 year old mother's atrophied brain. And if you're self funding then forget about adult social care stepping up when you need respite. Frankly society needs to have a good hard look at how "compassionate" this pursuit of a confused potentially drugged up longevity really is. The totally unrealistic Cadbury ad - daughter he doesn't recognise comes by opens curtains picks up post and the father who still lives alone? As if. I would not want to live to that state and I doubt any of you would either.

Nevertrustacop · 07/09/2025 18:36

This is bananas. How do you imagine dementia is diagnosed? Seriously. What do you think will diagnosis dementia?

oldclock · 07/09/2025 18:37

What means of fast accurate diagnosis do you want?

Whenindoubthugitout · 09/09/2025 08:14

I’m all for this,
the cure won’t be for those currently living with a form of dementia, but it will be drugs that prevent the deterioration of the brain as the illness takes hold.

as we cure more and more other diseases, more people will potentially develop a form of dementia, Early diagnosis of it will lead to more positive outcomes, in the same way early diagnosis of cancer leads to better outcomes.

the idea of watching someone for 6 months to diagnose this illness is outrageous.
my husband was diagnosed with memory tests and a ct scan. It took 4 months

There are blood tests being developed that can diagnose Alz before symptoms. which can lead to better outcomes, as Donepezil and Mementine can slow the progression of the illness.

You are right, and I am sorry you are living with this. But it might change the outcome for you or your children if you were to develop this.

i say this as my husband with Alz sits next to me, and my gran with vascular dementia is in a home 3 miles from me, We can’t cure them, but we need to find a cure for the next generation, and early diagnosis will be a key factor in this.

Husband has Dementia, he is 67.Our Daughter is employed by Alzheimer's association. We still do not have a confimed diagnosis.Daughter & I have looked into the symptoms.Daughter & I think it's Lewy bodies dementia. His symptoms started during the night.Laughing, jerking while asleep. Now, it's shouting, swearing & waving his arms & legs about. This is sporadic. He is still driving a car.Stuggles with spelling, Grammer, appropriate conversation & behaviour. We have seen a neurologist on NHS.We waited 2 yrs for a appointment. It was unhelpful, all she kept mentioning was many people have REM sleep issues, etc etc.She had made her mind up that as she had a note from the Doctors. She was not going to help. She suggested we buy a drug on Amazon! to help with his sleep issues. Husband's symptoms have become more noticeable.I would think that on the surface he appears like a fully functioning adult. Only close family, would know the true reality of Dementia. Husband can be a challenge to be in the company of. Argumentive, immature, Insensitive, Stubborn, lack of understanding, empathy, during conversations. Not entirely sure what I should next? I talk to my husband regarding this.I have videos of the night time issues.Husband is reluctant to look at them.Daughter has said she would go to the doctors with us.But she is going to have a operation shortly.I want her to enjoy her young life,I do not want to burden her with Dads dementia.I just take each day as it comes! I would really appreciate, if you have experienced this form of dementia! What did you do? What should do? Life expectancy? He started to have subtle symptoms from 2020.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 15/09/2025 02:00

Bulldog go back to GP and ask for another referral. Could it be LBD or Parkinson’s or Huntingdons? He needs a proper diagnosis before and an actual prescription not drugs from Amazon. Hope this is helpful x

My husband was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers 7 years ago aged 58..He was diagnosed using the usual Memory tests and then a PET scan and a lumbar puncture that detects the presence of amyloid plaques or tau proteins.

How’s he doing now?

we are in a drug trial, so we have regular scans and lumbar punctures to monitor progress.

Megjobethamy · 15/09/2025 22:56

Very poorly sadly... The decline was slow for the first 4/5 years and then he went downhill quickly and about two weeks ago he became unwell, fell and was brought to hospital by ambulance. Since being in hospital he has declined enormously and doesn't know us. He cannot feed himself and can only walk with assistance. It's heartbreaking tbh. We had hoped he would get on a drug trial but due to Covid, trials were suspended and his mental test score decreased so he wasn't eligible. I hope your husband does well on the trial.
