How can you tell if your parent has Alzheimer's

My mom just told me today that when my dad was at a doctor's appointment he was asked to draw a clock and he told my mom he couldn't do it. My dad is so stubborn that there is no way to get him to go and see a specialist. Should we convince him to see a specialist?

If he was asked that sort of question, and couldn't answer it then his GP is likely to already have dementia in their sights. His GP should be able to manage the condition from the surgery without needing a consultant.

Is it likely that your dad will be in denial?

If he was having that sort of test then someone (him? Your mum?) will have requested a GP appointment / cognition test so one /both of them will be aware.

If he was only asked to draw a clock as part of a general GP appointment then it's likely that a follow up appointment will have been /will be made.

After the GP appointment my mum was then referred to the Mental Health Team who then diagnosed her with Alzheimers.

Mum's was rapid onset so before the appointment came through it was obviously dementia of some sort. They arranged scans etc and then the official diagnosis.

Good luck.

Did your Mum suspect it and that's why she took him to the GP. I've heard people are referred to 'A memory clinic' for a diagnosis. I re-read your post and sounds like your Dad was on his own at the appointment. In which case your Mum should get in touch with the GP. And try and find out what's next.
