Mother furious with sister

A few days ago my 83 year old mother had a call with my sister where my sister suggested she get her hearing tested (DM finds my dad difficult to hear) .
My mother s reaction was very OTT, she was absolutely furious , called sis a bitch, hung up and totally misjudged the intention behind my sister s comment . My sister has always looked out for my mother s best interests and it was a miscommunication but it was all desperately upsetting for both of them.

Then yesterday my mother had a 'turn' when shortly after waking from a nap, she thought she needed to collect "a boy from school" . My father says it gave him quite a fright as it was really quite an odd incident and it lasted for a while before she returned to reality.
My DM has 2 sisters with dementia but until a few weeks ago I thought she was doing well. Her memory has definitely got worse and she finds cooking, organisation etc much more difficult than she used to. But I've been hoping and praying that it's the normal aging process.

What do you think? After her reaction to the hearing test I'm cautious about either me or my dad broaching it with her but perhaps we should phone her GP and ask them to discuss with her.

Are there any good medications or supplements available to help with early dementia?

Thanks so much

I think there has been research linking being hard of hearing and dementia so I think it’s quite important that your DM is checked.
My DM had episodes like this two years ago and it turned out to be inflammation of the brain- which went with a dose of steroids. UTIs also cause confusion.

There are only limited things can be done about dementia but if it isn't that we then as pp said, a diagnosis may prompt a solution. Also if dementia is confirmed then everyone will have an idea what to expect in the future.

Yes, she really needs her hearing tested asap and her hearing aid, if she’s got one and I think she hasn’t got one, updated. Could she go with your father, and both get tested? That’s what we’ve done!

And there’s probably an actual minimum age when it’s a good idea to have hearing tested, lots of new (ish) research re dementia and hearing - some suggest that if you can’t hear well as your brain is busy trying to hear. But LOTS of theories.

Plus gently suggest she and your father have their eyesight properly tested. When I had one cataract done it was awful as I then felt a bit lop sided and unsure until my second one was done.

And she might just have an infection and the dementia symptoms might go if it’s treated.

PS My father was HUGELY sensitive and difficult about his hearing loss, felt it was a lack of judgement of everyone else!

Thanks happy gardener!
She went through GP only yesterday for a checkup and I quietly rang GP in advance and said we were concerned about mums s memory. So he did a dementia test . No idea how it went
