Does the sundowning stage end?

Just that really. I can’t find any information on this. MIL has had just the most awful time with sundowning for the last 3 or so years. She would be so anxious, confused and distressed from early afternoon to well into night. But this Christmas she seems so peaceful, placid and content. She can still follow basic conversations and recognises us but is sleeping most of the time and has lost a lot of her mobility. I privately hope she dies soon during this peaceful stage, before she forgets us and becomes incontinent and immobile and distressed again.

Anyway, it has been such a positive but unexpected change that I am wondering if it is normal for sundowning to end abruptly? As far as I am aware, she isn’t on any different medications that may have caused this. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. We are all sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop.

My DM’s Alzheimer’s is quite advanced (stage 6/almost 7 stage) and she does sundowning. Its starts about 4.30 pm and can last all night, although sometimes she does get a few hours sleep in a row.
I have found that lots of her behaviours have either started or ended quite suddenly.
I hope your MIL’s calmness continues.

DMIL did stop Sundowning filling contracting Covid-19. She became very sleepy and died about a month later.

She had long before list the ability to recognise anyone or follow conversations though.

I hope your DMIL's peaceful stage is continuing Flowers
