Just a ramble really..
DM is usually in a care home with Alzheimer's..
She's probably had it since just before COVID.. so about 5 yrs now..
She's usually quite mobile and has a reasonable appetite..

She's had numerous UTIs over the last few years. Last one was mid October and after antibiotics and an overnight stay she seemed better..

Admitted again on Tuesday with high temperature, agitated and very sleepy (semi conscious? I wasn't there just what my DB described) He says she's aged visibly in only a week. Sunken and turned in on herself.

She has been on IV antibiotics since Tuesday night and I arrived yesterday to a shell of the mother I last saw a month ago..
I was hoping she'd be a bit improved today after 3 full days of antibiotics..

She's not eating or drinking much even with my encouragement and when I put a straw in she just chews it..
She has almost no mobility now.

She'd lost communication skills a while ago so can't speak to tell us what she wants..

I can't help thinking she's not going to improve from this.

Ex nurse here so maybe some knowledge isn't good.

Anyone's loved one come back from this?

And to clarify.. I don't mean the 'end'.
I've seen lots of people in Mum's home with no movement who just sit in a chair until they're then in bed permanently then they are no longer in the home.. I presumed they've died.
Just the end of my Mum being able to walk and eat much..

Hard to say, really.

My dad (Parkisons and LBD) was in hospital for a month - for most of which he was barely conscious - after a UTI > sepsis. Came out with minimal cognitive deterioration but virtually no physical capability (couldn't sit up in a chair or lift a spoon). He recovered to the point of being able to eat as well as previously and get himself around the home in a wheelchair. He was just on the point of being able to stand again when he died of something else.

That needed intensive private physio, though. The NHS physio service just gave him and exercise sheet and left.

Update..
Just seen the Dr and Mum has a chest infection and infection in her bowels and a lump seen on her stomach.. it's more than likely cancer but unless they do further invasive tests they can't be sure...
We are having a family meeting to discuss how/if we want treatment for her...
Feeling..? how are you meant to feel really?

I'm sorry, that tough news to receive.

Any feeling is OK - or none - there is no 'meant to' here. 'Conflicted' is a common one, though, if that helps.

Just an update really.. Mum rallied a bit but at the beginning of December she got another high temperature. Palliative care only from then as agreed by her family, care home team and her Drs..
I was with her when she died on the 14th December... Peacefully with me holding her hand.
Thankyou for your support.
