I live in an area with higher than average rates of dementia and almost a year wait for assessment. Now the local government have cut the budget for the service that helps families with dementia. The council say it's a "duplicate service" and that social workers will pick up the extra work when the dementia staff are gone.
I can't see how it's a duplicate service. There's nowhere else you can walk in for help when your loved one thinks they're an imposter or won't eat or can't stop crying. If you ask for a social worker, you have to wait months and then they might not be able to do anything. You can't get through to the GP at all.
There need to be more places like this, not less. (Just because the local council spent all their money on a hotel that never opened, doesn't mean they can let down vulnerable people.)
If you feel comfortable sharing this article from the local paper to help campaign, please do. Some of the carers will be on ITV this morning too.
