End Stage Alzheimer's?

Hi,

I wrote a few weeks ago about my father and getting him into a care home as he was deteriorating rapidly.

I live overseas and was back in the UK two weeks ago, and he has declined rapidly in a short time. I've just got back home, and he's been admitted to the hospital. He can't move. He had a heart scan, and that's fine, and now he's waiting for a spine scan, which will hopefully take place on Monday. Once they have full test results, they will move him to an elderly patient ward.

After this, my mum needs confirmation by the hospital that he needs to be transferred into a care home. Is this correct? They wanted to send him home, which is unbelievable. My mum refused. I guess we are coming to the end stage?

TIA

I’m not 100% clear on why he’s in hospital - has something changed suddenly?

The hospital will want to discharge him as soon as they know there is no specific reason for him to be there - no treatment or tests. If nothing significant has changed to take him into hospital then they will look to discharge him back to where he came from and social services will want to assess his long term needs back in his usual home environment. If something significant changed to take him in - eg a stroke - then they will reassess before discharge.

Is he self-funding or state funded for care?

He can't move. It came on suddenly. Before he had difficulty walking but he was able to walk short distances. We are waiting on the spinal scan to see what's going on.

He's currently at home but hopefully will be transferred to a care home. He will be self funding.

Why is he home if your mum refused? Surely it isn't safe if he can't move?

My mum was in a care home for about 6 weeks before she died. She really was out of it most of the time and had very little motor skills. When she stopped eating and drinking the care home nurses told us to prepare for her passing. Tbh they were fantastic and really helped us through the time.

We got funded care via the nhs which was agreed through ss. I'd suggest you get ss involved now and you may get some of it funded.

I agree op that home isnt the place for him now, he'll need 24/7 care by professionals.

It reads as if he was in a home setting, came over unable to move, was taken to hospital and the issue now is the OPs dm needs him to go into a care home at discharge from hospital.

A couple of years ago, DF had a fall and went to hospital. Whilst he was there, there were some honest discussions between his partner and us about the extent that his dementia was impacting him. The agreed result was that he was discharged to a care home instead of home, and he remains there to this day.

From what I recall, it was up to us to find a care home for him and set everything up. But the hospital did speak to the home about his needs so they could confirm that they could meet them. The hospital then just discharged him to that place when the time came.

Yes, he was at home and then went to the hospital. The doctor who examined him wanted him to be sent home, which is ridiculous.

Hopefully, we can arrange the transfer to the care home soon so he will feel more settled.

@BlackCatsAreBrilliant that's exactly what we want to happen. We've found a good care home close to my mum's house which has a good rating and she's been there to visit and was very happy.
